Jones: It is ‘evil’ to oppose diversity

I write this letter in response to a recent article asking the question, “Are diversity and inclusion important?”

Honestly, the answer really depends on which side of the color line you are on. So being a Colored, Negro, Black, African American, my answer has to be a resounding YES! Why?

Because America is truly a “melting pot.” From a local perspective, my presence and the presence of thousands of other people of color living in Fayette County makes diversity really real. Therefore, diversity and inclusion cannot be dismissed, diminished or ignored by someone who thinks he’s colorblind and knows what God wants.

Diversity without conscientious efforts to appreciate and include people of other races ultimately breeds adversity. And with adversity among races come racial tensions.

Because no sane person wants racial tension in their community, isn’t it reasonable to encourage people of all races to associate or work together and give every one the fairest chance to serve as a county commissioner or school board member?

So, let’s look back to see where we as a society are going. As America was becoming the nation we live in today, black people in particular were oppressed, excluded and exploited in a vast separate and unequal society especially in the South where I grew up.

I can clearly remember a time when black people were virtually excluded from television shows, commercials, pro sports, political office and well-paying jobs. Racial tensions reached a fever pitch and violence ensued in the mid 1960s during the great civil rights movement toward equality.

Thanks to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders, serious efforts toward inclusion were made by wise leaders, and America was much better off for it. By the grace of God over these last 50 years, the diverse array of people of all races, creeds and colors has made America the great nation it is.

Celebrating diversity and inclusion has indeed united many Americans as illustrated by the recent Fayette NAACP-sponsored MLK Day Parade and Program. So why would someone say that values like diversity and inclusion excuse us from the hard work of discerning good and evil?

Celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion is a very GOOD thing. But isn’t abusing God’s name to denigrate diversity and degrade inclusion simply EVIL?

When you oppose or openly speak out against inclusion in this obviously diverse society, aren’t you promoting adversity and exclusion? Isn’t that EVIL?

So, what kind of future do you want for Fayette County? One where people of one race control the affairs of this diverse community or a future where there is inclusion and harmony among the leadership and workforce?

And I promise not to judge you by the color of your skin but by the content and sensibility of your reply.

Speaking of the NAACP

The North Carolina branch lead by Rev. William Barber held a "Moral March" today in Raleigh to demand…..well to demand change. This group is apparently upset about those evil Repubs and their horrific policies that suppresses the "peoples" like voter ID.

Well as reported by a few observant individuals, the aforementioned NAACP branch provided a list of "Do's and Dont's" for marchers. Well guess what's on the "Do" list:

Bring a photo ID.

Here's the link to the list:

List-ID's / a not so subtle attempt to oppress the vote.

Very similar to the list given to Civil Rights marchers. If you didn't have an ID, you were jailed as a John/Jane Doe and conveniently lost in the 'system'. The demand for an ID did not achieve the desired result. Obama was elected for a second term. I guess some other than 'black' Americans voted for him and not the other guy. . . And they all had required ID's. Next.

This is the biggest piece of

This is the biggest piece of garbage I've ever read in this paper. Opposing diversity is evil? Give me a break. Destroying communities by shoving "people of color" down its throat via government fiat is evil. Take a look at Fayette county in 10 years and tell me how culturally enriched it has become by diversity. Wherever "people of color" go dysfunction inevitably follows. That's not racist speculation, it's fact.

Practice what you preach, Mr. Jones

Where is the diversity in the NAACP? Why did the NAACP sue create a racially segregated portion of Fayette county?

Thou hypocrite

Atlanta's Most Wanted

Quite a diverse crowd in that lineup. What's to celebrate? They are all criminals.

Sounds fair....

That is exactly how I have always judged you. Content and sensibility. Enough said.

Diversity?

Really? Diversity?

Wasn't it Martin Luther King Jr that stated "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."?

Oh how so many forget

Yes indeed now 2 of those little children want to sell his Bible

and his Nobel Peace Prize. That speaks to their character much more than the color of their skin, so in a way MLK has gotten his wish. That's another good test of how appropriate someone's actions are - what would MLK say or do?

What would MLK do?

If he had the time, he probably would have instructed his estate to display those invaluable material objects to be displaysed for the public to enjoy. Oh - wait a minute - that's what he did. It is assumed that the brothers want to sell the articles - it will be interesting after this public airing of this mess' - what they will admit to what they want to do with the items.

Character equals keepsakes?

People of diverse hoarding cultures have "character".

Character equals 'white'? Persons of diverse cultures have 'character'. Some can't forget that 'separate but equal' limited thinking still exists. We haven't forgotten - just celebrating that after 50 years, in Fayette County, the majority of citizens are willing to practice judging by character rather than skin color. The 'law' has judged the actions of the voting practices of this county to be limiting in opportunity. Maybe so, maybe not - we'll see at election time. There are 'blacks' who respect 'whites' with expertise and character - and who knows, they, as a group, may elect one!! (If 'blacks' vote as a group in Fayette County) Is that the fear? Hmmmm. Remember, only residents of Fayette County can vote - not residents of Clayton County - and they had trouble delineating a 'black/minority district in Fayette County.

Diversity?

I have no problem with anyone moving next to me based on their skin color..It is the cultural diversity I don't want..and when I say Cultural..I mean ghetto culture. I lived in Clayton when it was 50-60% and had no problems but then we started getting folks like the NAACP involved that gerrymandered the districts to skew "democrat" and got more and more Urban Ghetto folks moving in ..well it got worse and worse..DM..I think a lot of the members of this forum do not accurately portray what the actual fear is. I would love to have Dr King be my neighbor but not Rick Ross who just bought Evander's house.(A Notorious Gangster Rapper who took his stage name from a notorious Drug Dealer Murderer)

darrylwd - It is

It is interesting how we seem to be able to celebrate diversity but not unity. The more we "celebrate" we seem to be more divided than ever as a nation.

We're all individual Americans first.

"Openly speak out", about what is right or wrong is STILL a white person's right. When you try to silence/intimidate those that speak out with a different view and logical reason for it...isn't that EVIL?

Sorry, but we STILL have rights and if we are tired of being force fed (and our children in school), it is our right to say we are sick of it.

But even more important for you...without the "constant churning " and finger pointing at EVIL to root out, wouldn't you be out of a job? LOL!

Oh suggarfoot

You still insist on being 'separate'. What are you fearful of? Suggarfoot - you are white and male. I am black and female. As Americans, we have 'rights' - and what we celebrate is the growing opportunity to exercise those rights on an equal playing field. Mr. Jones - and other leaders of Civil Rights groups will be out of a job when the likes of you recognize that American of color are also citizens. His 'job' was created because it was necessary to 'speak out against the evil of racial ignorance in this country. He, as the Supreme Court has agreed, still has a job to do because of thinking like yours.
