The concept of a public school system partnering with local industries is still new to many of us. The very idea of changing the 100-year-old institution of public education is sure to evolve slowly.

But the Fayette community continues our learning process to better understand what a college and career academy (CCA) could provide Fayette students and the community.

Right way to learn to shoot

I’m currently a sophomore in high school and, as long as I can remember, I have been taught about firearm safety.

Over the years I have learned to respect the power a gun holds, gun owner responsibility and my Second Amendment right.

Looking forward to college, I was glad to see the recent push for concealed carry on college campuses defeated. I know there is a self-defense issue, but on campus, student maturity is still developing, weapons training and experience are limited and alcohol use is frequent — lousy ingredients for gun safety. A year ago, Fayette business, political, and educational leaders met for what we thought would be a singular discussion of local employment issues. The conversation surprised many of us, as we quickly learned that hundreds of technical jobs are available right here in Fayette County.

Sine die, 2013

Thursday night, March 28, just before midnight, the gavel came down and brought the 2013 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly to a close.

As always, the challenges were many, but it turned out to be a very productive session. I wanted to write a column and mention a couple of the more high profile items that were adopted this year and will write a subsequent column with a list of many of the bills that passed that did not receive as much media coverage.

Closing FMS: A student’s opinion

I’m Samantha Frazier. This is my first time writing my own personal viewpoint to a large audience. I hope I can do it right.

I’m in seventh grade at Fayette Middle School in Fayetteville. FMS is on the chopping block for the Fayette County school closings.

I’m not going to like it but I’m gonna support the school closings. What people have to understand is that there are things in life that you have to overcome.

I have attended the board meetings on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and my view lately is that, logically, it is necessary though it may hurt some communities. Read More»

A review of bills passed in busy legislative session

Last Thursday as the clock struck midnight the General Assembly concluded its 40th and final day of the 2012 legislative session. It was a busy session and I believe our continued focus on jobs and the state economy led to some important measures being sent to the Governor’s desk in the final days of the session.
