Unable to care for his dogs, PTC man, 72, shoots all 4 of them

PTC cops charge him with cruelty to animals

A Peachtree City man has been charged with cruelty to animals after killing his four dogs because he could no longer care for them.

Richard L. McAllister, 72, was charged with four counts of cruelty to animals, according to Fayette County Jail records.

The incident was reported on Jan. 20 when a call was made concerning the deaths of four dogs at a residence on Brander Pass, according to police reports. That’s off Blue Smoke Trail, just west of Lake Kedron in north Peachtree City.

Peachtree City officers met with McAllister, who admitted to killing the dogs on the previous day because he could not care for them and could not find any other way to get rid of them, reports said.

Reports said the investigation led to search warrants being obtained and executed. Officers at the residence located the bodies of the four dogs in a back yard dumpster, according to reports.

McAllister subsequently admitted shooting the dogs in the head and putting them in the dumpster, reports said.

County animal control employees removed the bodies of the animals from the property.

McAllister was charged on Jan. 21.

I'm not buying his story!!  He should have been charged with a whole lot more!!!  What about illegal dumping and disturbing the peace?  He has certainly distrubed my peace !!
Ginga You KNOW I'm a critter lover, (Like most critters better than I do people)  BUT (and hear me out for a second before ya jump down my throat) I SERIOUSLY have a problem with giving Animals MORE rights that humans, When a Human can be deprived of Life Liberty or Property over an animal ,,we have moved into Animals having MORE rights than people. No I don;t like it when idiots use dogs fighting as entertainment or even chickens.. BUT,, I just can not support laws that give a Dog MORE rights than people ,,, We lock folks up and suspend their Human Rights when they violate other human beings rights, because others Humans have equal rights, Now we're locking up humans because Dogs,,,,have equal rights? naw I just can't get behind that. I have MORE rights than my Beagle, and even more than my Horse. Now as to charging this man,, Discharge Firearm inside city limits; Discharging a weapon with-in 150' of a road, Discharging a weapon on less than 10acs, Improper Animal Disposable, (Might even find a Federal Statute for that one) Ya see, There are OTHER way's to seek punishment for ill behavior WITHOUT handing out Humans Rights to critters (and let's not forget, we're dealing with democrats, if they ever figure out their Dog has Human Rights,,, they'll demand Voting Rights....(It's bad enough my Deceased Ancestors Voted for Obama,, don;t need my dog and Horse voting for Hillary)

He should have done it like the rest of us - just take them up to the Kroger parking lot at night and turn them loose. Let someone else deal with the problem - that's the American way.
This has nothing to do with animals having more rights than people.  What this guy did was wrong in every possible way. You are not an animal lover even though you may think you are.
esdunn  LOL So you ASSUME to know what I am lol that's just funny
From your post you are a poor excuse for a human being.  Your only problem had to do with him using a gun.  I guess you would have been OK if he had poisoned them or beat hem to death.
Animals in Georgia do have more rights than people and it is a real shame in many ways. You can be attacked by a dog and as long as the dog doesn't have a "history" or do serious damage (take an a limb off), the dog will get a pass.  The only mistake that I see he made was the way he put them down. He could have just as easily taken them to Animal Control and instructed them that they put the dogs down.

Jessie, I have to admit that I have "a bleeding heart" when it comes to children, old folks (I'm one of those), and animals.  I am "Mom" to two adopted children, "Aunt Mama" to an adopted niece and nephew, and "leader of the pack" when it comes to my two rescued canines and one rescued Cockatiel.  I just don't buy the guy's excuse of not being able to find another solution, just like I don't buy abortion excuses.  There is always the Humane Society, RescueMe.com, Fayette County Senior Services, veterinarian's offices, friends, neighbors, relatives, and if all else failed one could even go to Kroger parking lot and tell passing friendly looking folks about his problem. Two of my all time best friends are veterinarians, and I've never known either one of them to turn anyone down who had a problem caring for an animal of any kind.  We have humane laws because we have "idiot" human beings who throw puppies out of moving cars, pour acid and boiling water on dogs and cats, starve animals to death, raise dogs to fight and then turn them loose on unsuspecting children.  Since I am a human being, I believe that I am responsible for my actions and that all other human beings should be responsible for their actions.  BTW, if my pups could vote, they would vote as a conservative the way their pack leader does.  I can see it in their warm brown eyes.
Bleeding Heart Ginga lol (I NEVER thought I would EVER get to say that out loud lol ) Here's MY problem with "Humane" laws,, Say ya have a Horse and he Founders, if ya call an old vet he/she will recommend putting it down, If ya call a younger Vet he/she will likely recommend heart Bar shoes ,maybe wedge pads, and maybe even cutting the Deep Digital Flexor Tendon(s) .ALL of this is "normal Humane care",,around here,, But if ya call me I'm gonna recommend no shoes, a trim that mirrors the correction for the coffin bone, and EXERCISE , Now some vets get bent all out of shape over this treatment protocol, (Developed by Keith Seeley and Dr Robert Bowker of Mi State, with Complete Success, I've employed this protocol for +10 years now and have save over 100 Foundered Horses from "Humane Deaths" .. My point is Congress Critters do not write HUMANE laws, they write laws to benefit a certain group, over another group, and do not DEFINE in clear language WHAT (legally) Humane is ,, it is this failure of Law makers that causes me to question Animals being given HUMAN RIGHTS ,, Now as for this filth in PTC,, Tar, Feathers, Ant Hills, and a really ticked off Bobcat come to mind for him BUT I'm just uncomfortable giving Government Authority over my Rights as a Human ,,simply because someone else disagrees with what is Humane, and the Law makers refuse to DEFINE it Clearly  (Do you know EVERY TIME I ride Smokey Joe down 74 in Tyrone 911 gets called by some hysterical tree hugger claiming that I am abusing my Horse by riding it (not just me either)

Jessie, you certainly know your horses.  Only wish I could say the same.  The article says that PTC guy is 72 years old (I'm 72).  From the photograph, he doesn't look as if he is physically incapacitated.  He looks very healthy and happy, to me.  Maybe he is financially strapped!!  The article doesn't say WHY he couldn't care for them.  Unless he lives 25 miles into the backwoods, doesn't have a phone, TV, computer, relatives or neighbors..... If he speaks the English language and is able to converse with others, surely he could have found someone else to care for his dogs.  Legally speaking, a dog is a posession, a thing.  There are some folks out here, myself included, who consider our dogs to be members of our family.  I truly understand what you are saying about "Congress Critters."  And, I guess you could even lump me in with "a certain group" or special interest group.  I worked for many years trying to get our Ga. Legislators to put some big, sharp teeth in the dog fighting laws here in Ga., and they did make a little progress.  However, we still have dog fighting and cock fighting in Ga.  The bottom line for me is that my dogs like to lay in the sunshine, chase squirrels along our fence railing, lay on the sofa next to me in the evening, and sit quietly waiting for the last two bites of my hamburger.  Maybe, PTC guy's dogs liked doing the same things.  But, because PTC guy couldn't "get rid" of them any other way, his dogs won't be able to live out their lives.  Nope, they got a bullet in their brains because PTC guy couldn't "get rid" of them any other way.  I guess you'll just have to call me an animal advocate.  And, yes, dogs, animals are better than people.  Old PTC guy is still walking around enjoying his steak or hamburger.  His four dogs will never feel the sunshine on their backs again.  So, I still have to say that PTC guy needs to be held accountable.  Human or animal, if you cut us we feel pain and bleed. If you shoot us, we are probably dead.  The difference is that humans have a choice, animals don't.  They are at our mercy!!
Ginga, I DO NOT disagree with the notion this PTC geser (sp?) is an absolute idiot, Bullet in the head is what ya do to Rabid dogs, or car squished critters NOT to "I'm tired of them" and I would remind ya,, All Dogs Go to Heaven, (or I don't want to go, as the song say's I want to pet a Lion)  But and I can't stress this enough, I DO NOT like the idea some office bound wouldn't know the difference between a Beagle and Bloodhound deciding my style of Husbandry is inhumane,,,when over in the next county it's called "normal" .. At the end of the day HUMAN RIGHTS have to trump Animal Rights ,for I will NEVER give up my Rare + Rib Eye's

Mental issues             This guy likely has plenty of them.
More than likely, that about sums it up.  Glad he didn't go off on someone.

I'd like to know more about the gentlemans sitiuation. Why wasn't he able to care for the dogs any longer? Did he attempt to turn them into animal control? Was no assistance available or did he not even try? What he did was wrong and I'm not trying to say it wasn't. But before I decide to condem him I'd like to know more.

You can't use logic with an illogical person.

G35  & Logic Good questions but apparently this man is incapable of recognizing logic or rationale.  Did not deserve to own animals.
Our animal shelter doesn't take owner surrender dogs.  Our local "no kill" rescues are full, they need more people to foster unwanted pets.   This is so sad.   It would have been much worse if he had turned them loose at kroger or walmart.  That IS what many people do here.  I rescued a puppy who was 6 weeks old.  He had been dumped in the woods by McIntosh HS.  by the time he was found he had to spend 7 days in ICU, because he was so malnourished and dehydrated.   People in this county are hopelessly irresponsible when it comes to taking care of their pets.  In this county sadly this man didn't have many humane options available to him if a vet wouldn't put them to sleep.

Sky reality check   Thanks for the reality check. The people who are horrified and want other people to make it better so they can feel good will never understand hard choices like saving the last bullet.
Did any of you people even comment when your police chief shot his wife, I guess you would say that b- deserved it huh. These bitches should have been turned out at K-roger so there would be several dozen more strays in PTC for you 'rons to love and protect. Well if it's only a misdemeanor to shoot your wife in the back how much trouble can the guy be in.He should not be in any trouble, he owned the dogs and he dealt with his property in the best way he could, he's 72 years old. Have any of you called animal control lately, they won't even respond to a request for help with animals you own unless its to charge you with a crime. You guys are going to quote me all kinds of laws you bleeding 'rons have put on the books but guess what It's hog killing weather and I  won't read any of them. There are mo' of you Rons every year, when are you holding the next road kill funeral. Ate any barbeque or chinese lately. where's that pot belly pig and my cat and dog. A friend of mine said yesterday it's hard to be proud to be an American anymore the 'rons are building dog poop parks instead of kid parks, and charging elderly citizens for dealing with their own property responsibly, well maybe the garbage company has a rule about animals in the dumpster but it's hard to flush a dog like a goldfish or a bird or a rat or ect. oh yeah most of you need to go turn yourself in. Why am I dazed and confused, because the 'rons are running the country. next you will elect a queen and give up your guns and give up the rest of our rights and money as well and serve the queen again, read your history 'ron.

Dazed Dave & Confused Diane

Yes, I responded about the ex Chief, what is your point?  You consider these events related?
NUK_1's picture
Yeah, you are dazed and confused
I agree with you.  Our ex police chief was given a free pass for "accidently" shooting his wife.   This man is arrested for shooting his dogs? Unless the dogs were tortured or starved, I don't get it. It would have been worse if he had done what the majority of the people do here,: ie dump them off without tags or microchip and have them get hit by a car, or  worse slowly starve to death in the woods.
Dead Dogs I certainly don't endorse what this man did, however... perhaps a little perspective is in order.  i once shot a squirel with a brand new pellet gun. I felt bad about it later because I didn't have any good reason to kill it other than trying out the gun, however a cat ate it a few minutes later.  Will I be paid a visit and put in a cage for this cruelty?  Guess we'll see. If you shoot a deer, is that cruelty to animals?  Is putting out rat or roach poinson cruelty to animals?  Anyone like burgers?  Been to see what happens at a beef processing plant?  I smell inconsistency and hypocracy. So let me make sure I understand.  This guy is treated like a criminal and put in a cage for shooting some dogs, but it is perfectly legal to pull apart an unborn child limb by limb, crush their head, and throw them in the trash, sometimes still breathing.  I guess everyone has their own definition of cruelty. Interesting...

“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” - Kant
I don't know the mindset of Richard McAllister, but the article states the dogs were shot in the head, so there's no reason to jump to the conclusion that he tortured them or was otherwise cruel to his four dogs. Heck, it's likely he is a dog lover if he had four of them. Frankly, I was expecting there'd be some rural folks here to share their perspective. I've known some people who grew up on farms or other rural settings who dealt with sick or injured animals by swiftly and mercifully shooting them in the back of the head. I realize these dogs probably weren't sick, but perhaps in his mind he was treating them better by shooting them himself rather than having them locked up and later killed by animal control. He could well be a creep, or he could have been trying to be a responsible pet owner by putting his animals down rather than let them starve or run loose and get mangled by traffic. Considering no one here claims to know this gentleman or have firsthand knowledge his situation, we seem pretty judgemental in condemning him without further information.
Rich Um,, Now that Animals have MORE rights than people do only a FOOL would get on the internet and share stories about how, when they were younger and the Best Dog on the Planet finally had to be Put Down, and how that persons dad went out in the woods with his son and the dog , and with the patience of Mosses waited up the hill while the son did what was best for his Best Dog ever, Or how a Horse busted it's knee trying to escape a pack of Wild Dogs (used to be s HUGE problem in certain corners of Fayette,,seems the citidiots found out Fayette was the place to drop off unwanted dogs,) The Vet would have happily put the Horse down for a mere $150 bucks, (and If you're ever seen "Vet Style Euthanasia"  then you'd understand a 255g .45lc to the proper skull area is QUICK and INSTANT and far less painful. Rich,, understand in today's Gelded America "Old Yeller" is a Satanic Animal Cruelty should be banned Movie I mean how DARE a human take the responsibility for CARING (beginning to end) for THEIR animals,, that responsibility is someone else's
