Fludd touts HB 828 passage

State Rep. Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone) expressed Monday his satisfaction with the passage of House Bill 828, which made it out of the House of Representatives with a 153-16 vote.

The legislation would provide an income tax credit of $2,500 per parolee per year to employers who hire individuals who have been granted parole within the preceding 12 months.

“Many criminal offenders find it difficult to find employment due to their past convictions,” said Fludd. “I believe everyone deserves a second chance, especially who have paid their debt to society. HB 828 offers those recently released from prison an opportunity to earn a living while reducing the overall tax liability for employers.”

The bill will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.

While I am in favor of second chances, I don't believe in blind trust.  If a released prisoner is on a diet, don't let them work at the buffett. Does anyone know if there are provisions in the bill that prohibit certain jobs for certain paroloees?     John Giovanelli DC

Well gee Virgil, if they're on parole, they HAVEN'T FINISHED paying their debt to society!
Very true!  When do we consider their "debt to society to be paid"?  As a business owner, I have interviewed my share of ex-cons who have commtied crimes 10, 20, and even 30+ years ago and whom are now mdoel citizens (sadly, I could not hire him because he needed to be bonded) and are being roadblocked because of their past.
