Haddix announces run for county commission post

There are a full spectrum of opinions in the county about the agreement reached to settle the NAACP district lawsuit. This settlement will impact the county for a long time to come.

The agreement is legal and will govern the 2016 Board of Commissioners and Board of Education elections. The new boards seated in 2017 will play major roles in shaping the decisions and realities guiding Fayette into the future.

Believing I have a lot to offer and wanting to be part of shaping that future, I hereby declare my candidacy for the new at-large commission post.

What do I bring to the table? I have been a mayor, councilman, member of the Board of Health and have been a state annexation arbitrator since 2009. Even when not in office I have remained active by attending various meetings, letters to the editor and my website.

I also owned and operated a business for 20 years, was a supervisor in a $100 million dollar roll mill and a vet who did intelligence work for Nam, Russia and China. As well worked in 4-H Boy Scouts, and HOA president.

Having grown up on a farm in Indiana and lived overseas, I understand and appreciate various lifestyles, values and the impact of government.

As a commissioner, I will not be there for self promotion, but to serve you. I will read the materials given to me by staff, do my own research as needed, ask questions, debate agenda items, vote and then move on.

While I will not rubber stamp staff’s recommendations, I do value them and do not believe it is the job of a commissioner to micro-manage.

What are my goals as a commissioner?

1. Economic Development – we need the Fayette County Development Authority to be proactive, not just reactive, in bringing good paying career jobs here.

In turn such jobs sell homes and fill empty and under-utilized retail space. They add revenue to county and city coffers which keeps property and other taxes down.

They promote educational opportunities here and support our school system.

Having their employees here reduces commuter traffic. It allows more people to get to work via golf carts and bicycles. As well promotes carpooling and other alternative transportation avenues.

2. Produce budgets that are sound and balanced. Fiscally I am very conservative. Taxes, fees, debt and spending have to be justified as needed, wanted and productive.

3. Listen to the residents. I will be elected to represent you, not me.

4. Review, update, remove and create ordinances that are appropriate for today and protect our quality of life. Variances, inconsistent ordinances and other issues create precedence that can be disastrous. Experience from dealing with city ordinances and annexation arbitrations has shown these are very real concerns often unseen until too late.

5. Having worked with GDOT and the ARC on many issues, we need to stay aware of their plans for Fayette County and how they will impact us. Materials on the issues are on my website.

We can accomplish what is needed for the future of our great county without burying it under asphalt and concrete. We didn’t move here for urban living.

Note I said “we.” While each of us can contribute, individually, there are five commissioners. That means it has to be a “we” effort.

With my experience and living in Fayette for 29 years, I am ready to step into the job and go to work today.

Your support; moral, financial, campaigning, etc., would be greatly appreciated. I am available to speak with individuals and groups. This election is important to everyone. Contact information is on donhaddix.com.

Thank you for your consideration. I value your vote of confidence and look forward to serving as your commissioner.

Dear God, help us all
Well said.
I'm going to talk with him in the coming weeks to see the lessons he has learned.

At-large post                                                                   Well, there's his first mistake. Running at-large against Oddo, I presume, puts him at the mercy off the entire county 4/5 of which know him only as the goofy little mayor who sued the city or someone sued him or something or whatever they may have read in The Citizen. Oddo on the other hand is an incumbent and voted to settle the lawsuit with the agitators thru an agreement that Haddix himself says above is "legal" ---well, duh!   So Haddix may get a few votes as Oddo's opponent from the "Settle?Never!" crowd, but won't get many on his own.                                                                                                              Running against Brown in an all-Peachtree City District would be great. Smaller area to campaign in and both candidates were mayor here with mixed results. Shame Logsdon could not join them waving on the highway and the debates would be priceless. Ah, the good old days.                                                                                                             Best Haddix quote for those of you who couldn't get through the whole announcement so soon after breakfast - ----    (Haddix says)  "Note I said “we.” While each of us can contribute, individually, there are five commissioners. That means it has to be a “we” effort."                          Well now, very special,  mighty fine, here "we" go onto bigger and better things in 2017.                             BTW, I'd like to take back my previous suggession that the person elected to the at-large seat automatically become board chair - you know, just in case. So forget I ever said that.
Don, I supported you for mayor, thought you were on the right tract and still do. I also supported Steve Brown, thought he was on the right track and still do. Both of you seem to share similar ideologies and tact. However, I am concerned you are becoming politicians, a profession I personally do not consider legitimate. With that stated, I want to see three things from you guys, whether you are running for the same office or different offices. 1. Obtain and maintain a high ethical standard; be above and beyond reproach and don't say anything derogatory about anyone or group of people.  2. When you have finished doing whatever you can to influence opposing views and positions, be willing to compromise for the betterment of your constituency. Demagoguery is poor strategy. Persuasion and aggression are not the same thing. 3. Communicate what you learn and how you plan to address various issues to your constituency. We have all made mistakes. Hopefully, we learn from them. Good luck.

Interesting Doug        1) You can forget about that since people like Steve Brown buried Huddleston in the election in order to get Barlow elected. Typical Brown mess.  2) No, they'd rather go  to The Citizen and harp at those who hold opposing views, including the elected officials they are supposed to work with.  Both of these clowns have quite a history of that. 3) Yeah, ask Steve Brown about what he thinks these days about district voting since he ranted that we're all bigots from the Stone Age and then got destroyed in two elections and suddenly did a 180 to completely the opposite side? It will be a cold day in hell before I would ever vote for these egomaniacs with agendas. Like you said, they are becoming professional politicians and everyone is really sick of that. Brown loses 2 elections by huge margins and then Haddix gets booted overwhelmingly, but let's keep running because only I know what's right and I will make you believe it!!!!! That's professional policians to me.
NUK_1, what I do like about both of them, they persevere and that demonstrates character. I believe both suffer frustration at times and need good mentorship, and possibly charm school. I don't believe they will allow themselves to be bought or influenced by money, and since they are arguably not influenced by power, it appears seeking power isn't at the heart of their ego. Maybe they like pole vaulting over ant hills, swimming upstream, or jousting with windmills. I know I have occassional traits of obsessive compulsive disorder; as do most "Type-A" personalities. I don't expect anyone to be perfect. But, I do expect and insist the person representing me be of sound character. Incidentally, I also like Eric Imker and especially the way he does his homework.

Good analysis                                           of Brown and Haddix as far as it goes. No, they can't be bought and are not impressed with power other than their own. That's where the trouble really starts and they adopt a my way or the highway stance on certain issues and some times they are even right on the issue, but oh so wrong on the technique of compromise.                                        You said in best in your advice to Haddix earlier - persuasion and aggression are not the same thing. I doubt we will be seeing either of them or Barlow in elected office much longer. And to repeat, 2016 is a perfect election year for emerging female candidates. Turnout either for or against Hillary will be huge among women and while they are at the polls, they might as well vote for a local female councilwoman or a female county commissioner. Run Ginger, Debbie, Vickie, Kim, Cyndy, Susan, Run.
Nuk & Haddix No fear nuk, just wait til Mike King gets spun up!!
