Muslim immigration to U.S.: Look at the actual facts

America is a melting pot, especially when compared to other nations around the world, including Europe. My own father and all four of my grandparents were immigrants. Their descendants include physicians, teachers, police officers, and military heroes.

On the other hand, at certain eras in the history of our nation we have had discriminatory policies that have been applied to keep out “undesirables” as defined by the times. These groups have included ethnicities such as Greeks, Asians and Jews, who are now well accepted and doing above average financially.

The current undesirable group, clearly being exploited for political gain, is the Muslims. But, what are the facts? How much of this attitude is driven by ethnic and/or religious discrimination and how much is based on a reasonable and rational interpretation of the situation?

Well, to begin with, every case is different. To be true to our ideals, America should not say that we refuse to accept all people of a certain race or religion, as has been advocated by some national politicians. For example, Muslim interpreters allied with our troops have been targeted by Isis. Should we keep them out? Obviously, we should not.

However, we do want immigrants who accept our values and way of life. Along these lines, it is essential to know what people in various Muslim nations believe regarding Sharia law.

Sharia law, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, is the Islamic term for a code of justice based on the Koran. It is promoted by the Saudis, supposedly our allies, who have historically financed anti-Western fundamentalist schools throughout the Islamic world. When we hear of people being lashed or limbs cut off in Arab countries, that happens as a result of Sharia law.

So, how widespread is the acceptance of Sharia law in the Muslim world? In 2013 Pew Research, one of the most respected bipartisan polling groups, surveyed numerous Islamic nations on this topic. The results are eye-opening, especially for people like me who consider themselves to be enlightened regarding social issues and foreign policy.

Support for Sharia law varies widely by region. In some areas, such as Europe, there is little enthusiasm for it. However, in many other geographic areas (including South/Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and much of Africa) support for Sharia law is astonishingly high.

For example, 91 percent of the population of Iraq is in favor of Sharia law, as is 89 percent of the Palestinian population. Even in our allies Egypt and Jordan, the numbers are over 70 percent.

Obviously, these findings should have had a major impact on how our foreign policy is conducted. But apparently, they have not.

Do we really believe that western style democracies can be established in these countries? Or that invading them and putting up a “Mission Accomplished” banner will change their culture? It is little wonder that the so-called Arab Spring has rapidly become the Arab Winter?

Bringing this discussion back to immigration, what are the implications for the U.S.A.? First, there is obviously a danger in saying that we will bring in a set number of immigrants from Syria, a severely damaged nation. President Obama wants to be empathetic and bring in 10,000 people, but we should only admit people who have values compatible with ours. Screening these individuals will be extremely difficult and no quantitative goal should be set.

Second, the more of these refugees taken in at any one time, the less the ability of our nation to absorb them into the melting pot, especially if their values are in fact significantly different than ours.

In Europe, for example, the influx of Muslims has meant a drastic increase in terrorist attacks against Jews. In France, over 9,000 French Jews are leaving their homeland each year for safer nations. That is not something that we want repeated here.

Third, if any of these individuals do turn out to be terrorist plants, the “build a wall” chorus will be strengthened, causing other problems. The potential backlash is enormous for immigration in general.

In short, the United States is currently taking in a large number of immigrants each year, both legal and illegal. In 2014 alone, there were 1.3 legal immigrants, far more than just about any other nation.

It can be argued that this influx has historically helped our aging nation in a number of ways. For example, bringing in skilled labor such as doctors and nurses as well as people who are filling jobs in fields Americans do not want, such as seasonal agriculture.

However, when we are dealing with Muslim nations in certain geographic areas, we need to be careful to insure that we do not automatically assume that these immigrants can be easily absorbed, given their support of Sharia law. We must not let our heart overwhelm our common sense.

Sharia law in the U.S.    There is a topic worthy of a few more discussions.  It is all over this country and in our courts.  Good letter.  Oh, and he is on our Planning Commission, too.

Mr. Bernard advances a very logical argument. Unfortunately, he fails to apply his rationale universally. Just as Sharia law proves faulty as a structure for modern states, so does every other religious tradition. Secular governments prosper when their laws are based on rational tenets grounded in science and logic, not ancient, mystical texts. Listen anew to John Lennon’s IMAGINE. Perhaps the United States will awaken some day
Thank God we are blessed with the intellectual superiority of the bedwetting left to apply moral equivalence to sharia law and Christianity.  Absolutely astounding!!

Mosaic laws recorded in the Jewish and Christian Bible differ little from Sharia law in condemning just about everything (cursing your parents, wearing clothes made of different fabrics, suggesting that god doesn’t exist). The fortunate difference is that Jews and Christians largely ignore the draconian edicts in their holy books.
Please provide specific examples from the New testament and the Koran to back up your claim.

The Christian and Jewish Bible (Deuteronomy 13) calls for death to heretics who teach against their deity just as does the Quran (2:191-193). Thankfully, most Christians, Jews, and Muslims ignore these edicts or temper them with hermeneutics emphasizing other parts of their holy books. I offer no objection to mystical book applications at the church, synagogue, or mosque, but have serious concerns when these form the structure for legal codification in any nation.

STF PREXACTLY !!! "Religion" is a PERSONAL CHOICE, gather with those that share the beliefs, celebrate with like minded people. but the nano second one begins to inflict others by use of Force PERSONAL restrictions (Religion) they have at that time become "Evil" incarnate Abraham, Moses BOTH allowed the Hebrews (and Shebrews) CHOICE, Jesus, was ALL ABOUT CHOICE, (Without CHOICE Judas could not have betrayed Christ) even at the beginning moehamed taught choice, but quickly changed his tune

Fred Garvin BE CAREFUL of what YOU ask 1 Corinthians 14:34 Paul tells women to be SILENT,,tell me Fred at YOUR "New Testament" church are the women silent? 1 Timothy 3:12 tells Followers of Christ to "Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well." Tell us Fred how many deacons in your Church are divorced and have filled Bankruptcy ? The Bible like the Constitution is oftened held on high but seldom read let alone Obeyed
As bedwetters are wont to do to make a false argument, the verses are taken out of context 1Corinthians 14:34 refers to a law that was present at the time. That law is no longer in effect and thus nullifies the verse. 1Timothy 3:12 - "A deacon must be faithful to his wife and manage his children and houshold well" Oh the horrors! Yep that verse is definitely morally equivelant to Sura 5 Verse 51 which states " “O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.” (Sura 5, verse 51) or this little gem- "And KILL them (the unbelievers) wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers.” (Sura 2, verse 191). Don't be a bedwetter

Culturally Relative Exegesis – I find myself in the unusual (but pleasant) position of agreeing fully with Freddie’s compelling argument here. The cultural laws and norms in 1st Century Asia Minor influenced St. Paul to prohibit women’s public speech. Those norms are irrelevant in 21st Century America. Applying this exegetical technique broadly can free Evangelicals from other untenable positions. For example, 1st Century people were ignorant of biological gender identity issues, and thus regarded homosexual behavior as a deviant choice rather than a congenital trait. Applying the cultural relative argument here rescues modern Christians from being tethered to unscientific pronouncements and their resulting discriminating policies.

Fred It always amazes me how GOD'S WORD turns out to NOT be eternal, People don't like what Paul tells the Corinthians about one thing so,,that was then this is now, but in the very next Chapter Paul tells the SAME Corinthians something we DO agree with and we're back to God's Word is eternal. The SAME issue applies to Timothy, here we have instructions that CLEARLY define WHO can be a Deacon, yet, every Sunday (oh that's a hoot too) Churches are filled with Deacons in direct contradiction to God's Word, On this Christians behave just as poorly as muslims as they seek to make their religion fit THEM and their ideas, in this behavior there is a complete absence of God.  Time and time again I hear people pray, "God be with me/us" The Bible I read say's He always is, we need not ask for it, the prayer needing to be spoken is God, help me/us be with YOU, Which neither Jew Gentile Christian or muslim can ever have a chance to do, when we're so busy changing His word to suit our current social state. Think of how Churches over Two Thousands years have changed the Bible, which has over the centuries caused endless denominations all saying "They" have the truth. NOW, let's translate this to the US Constitution, hear we have a mere 4,543 word document written in English thus no translation or interpreting is needed, we can READ EXACTLY what was debated, voted on and approved to the last letter of each word by the people themselves responsible for the Document, Yet look at the utter confusion this mere 240 year old "Word" causes, ,,People don't WANT the Peace God offers (Jew Christian muslim) They don't WANT the Liberty available to us (Constitution) they had rather dissect each 'Word" to fit THEIR will/desires no matter how far that action moves them away from the Peace each of us are Promised in BOTH the Bible and Constitution
