Outdoor burning ban is lifted. That’s great. Just when the weather cools down and we can turn off the air conditioning and open the windows. Guess we will have to hold our breath until the ban goes back into effect. Why can’t you just be a good neighbor and bag it and take it to the recycling center?

Nothing lowers the quality of life in a town more than that angry, thumping, heartbeat noise that is popular with a few idiots and their “pimped” cars. I’m trying to have a nice evening on my back porch and suddenly it feels like there’s an earthquake or explosion somewhere. It’s a LOUD bass noise. I can’t believe this is acceptable in Peachtree City. Then I realize the source of the noise and I can’t help but feel like I live in some sort of ghetto. Low quality living. I don’t know where these individuals come from, but I think it’s time we silence the blaster tubes in their cars. Extremely loud noises are universally unacceptable. I should not have to tolerate sonic assault. It is a violation and these youngsters should be taught what is and isn’t appropriate and considerate in a civilized society. I am asking, as a citizen of Peachtree City, that the police please step up enforcement of the noise ordinances. Toughen the penalties if necessary. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. If you live near Ga. Highway 74, Peachtree Parkway, Robinson, Crosstown, or Hwy. 54, you definitely know what I’m talking about. Let’s find a solution to this growing problem. This is the #1 quality of life issue in Peachtree City, as far as I’m concerned. Thanks for reading my rant.

I was sorry to hear the PTC Council is still considering a ban on gas carts. I use the paths for walking and for my electric cart and have for seven years, and during that time I have very seldom encountered a gas cart. I don’t believe there are that many here. The carts are not that loud and the smell of fumes lasts only a few seconds as they pass. They certainly do not pollute the the air as much as the numerous semi-trucks that travel Hwy. 54 through town day and night. I also don’t recall any of the council members saying they would ban gas carts before the last election. To do it now would be unfair and an abuse of power. What next, will they mandate hybrid autos for all citizens in the city? We are all hunkered down now waiting to see what the federal government will do to us next. We shouldn’t have to worry about our City Council in the same way.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Thought I’d seen it all until I saw a bicyclist on Hwy. 54 in the middle of town, texting while driving a bicycle through town. I was behind him for a while and thought he was either drunk or impaired, but when I pulled up beside him, he was texting. This is just the greatest country in the world: you can ride down a major highway and text on your phone at the same time.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

I’d be delighted to share the road with cyclists. Is your bicycle licensed and are you paying insurance to drive it on the road? If not, hop on the cart path and quit blocking traffic on Hwy. 74 and 54 and endangering the public on Peachtree Parkway north and south.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Aren’t bicyclists adorable in their brightly colored “Sesame Street” Speedo outfits? They look so manly and feminine.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

I have no problem with sharing the road with bicyclists. Although if I am going to share the road with them, I think it should be mandatory that they have their bicycles inspected yearly, pay taxes on them and have them properly licensed to use the roadways.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Bicyclists on Peachtree Parkway north and south and on Hwy. 54 and Hwy. 74. Why not let golf carts travel on these roads also? They are more visible and provide more protection than on a bicycle and can travel just as fast or faster than a bicycle.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Seen on the golf cart path: a blue stretch golf cart with five or six little children under 5 years old, and the Mommy (or babysitter) driving with one hand and talking on the cellphone with the other. May I ask why is it so important that you talk on the phone and jeopardize the lives of those small children? You are really a sad person.

Someone keeps building sidewalks. These sidewalks start nowhere and end nowhere. There seems to be no logic to their location or purpose. It is the Fayetteville city planners or the county. Spend our money wisely, and this is not it. Let’s look at Whitney Street. The potholes are not deep but they can rattle your teeth and might burst a tire. City Council does not seem too concerned right now, but next year is an election year for some. Let’s see if anything happens then.

After a 4.5 percent pay cut this past year for ALL Fayette County Board of Education employees, and a one-time “bonus” check of 1 percent of that back this year, many in the schools have found they are not being treated equally. The teachers were given a step-raise that gives them a raise for the years that they have served in the field. That is great and they deserve it, but what about the staff that work so hard to support the schools and the teachers? Although the board gave the teachers step raises, they did not give that step raise to staff positions or parapro teachers. Considering that HR only gives one year of credit for two years of work in any field and the 4.5 percent pay cut that everyone took, why are they left out? Some employes have 14 years of more experience in their field and are only given credit for six. To add insult to injury, they may have worked in the school system for four or more years, which would normally give them two steps, and have NEVER gotten a raise. Is this fair? Some of the full-time parapro teachers make so little that they have to go and get free meals at school just to feed their kids. For being the “best” school system in Georgia, are we really making it worthwhile for the good people to work for the FCBOE? How good do we want to be if Clayton County pays better?

I have been living in a rental house for a little over two months that is found to have a mold problem. My health has suffered, and I was blessed to quickly find another place to live to get my children and me out of this unhealthy environment. I am a teacher in Fayette County and a single mother who is temporarily handicapped due to complications with a knee replacement surgery and a subsequent surgery six weeks later. Teachers get paid once a month, and my ability to move is limited. One of my coworkers caught me in an emotional state a couple days ago. I shared my plight with her. As a result, she has organized people (some of whom I do not know) to show up at my house on Saturday morning at 9 to help me move. I just wanted to let someone know that there are some seriously wonderful people in in Fayette County.

I just returned from the members-only presale at the Friends of the Library book sale. When I got there at the opening time, an obvious book dealer was already indiscriminately grabbing handfuls of books and filling large boxes with them. He filled box after box as he grabbed books from under people’s noses. I was very offended that he was taking so many books away while I was looking at them. While I understand that the library benefits from huge sales, I think a dealer should only be allowed to shop after the rest of us have had a chance. A book dealer should not be allowed to shop before members and the general public. Even if the dealer has bought a membership in order to snag a lot of books, he should still not be allowed to make his huge purchase until the afternoon of the regular book sale day. We members are book-lovers who eagerly anticipate the book sales to find books by favorite authors. This man was only interested in taking what books he could grab and then selling them in order to make money for himself. He really took my joy out of the anticipated book sale.

Why do road workers in Fayetteville decide to paint lines and arrows during school rush hour traffic on the main road through Fayetteville. Why not do this at night during non-busy hours. What is the road department and/or DOT thinking? Oh, maybe they aren’t.

Although it was recently reported that Peachtree City and Tyrone have some of the lowest violent crime rates in the Atlanta area, we need to take off our rose-colored glasses and look at how crime has continually increased here over the years. We should all ask our sheriff to start the ball rolling to make these thugs not want to go to jail for free room and board and basketball. If our inmates were treated like those in Maricopa County, Ariz., and had to wear pink jumpsuits, work on chain gangs, give up smoking, coffee and unrestricted TV, that might just be a deterrent. Ask the sheriff to make the inmates clean up these blighted and foreclosed homes to help better our community. If he did this, he would be as popular as Sheriff Joe Arpaio who has been reelected an unprecedented five times. Take note, Sheriff Hannah.

I am an American. I am also a Muslim and the mother of a young man who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center nine years ago. This loss has been made even more painful by the attitudes of a growing number of Americans toward people of my faith. Please, please, try to understand that the great majority of Muslims are very much like you. We too want to see our children and grandchildren grow up in a safe and peaceful world. Do not judge an entire population by actions of the fanatic few. Anti-Islamic rantings, such as several published recently in this newspaper, are adding to the prejudice and misunderstanding that hurts us all. I thank those voices that have spoken out in defense of reason and tolerance. I wish I felt courageous enough to sign my name.

The Tyrone mayor has been trying to get the council to hire a part-time code enforcement officer. After reading the minutes of the last council meeting, I can only surmise the reason a part-time code enforcement officer is not hired is because Mayor pro tem Furr stated, “In these economic times, we ought not to be too hard on the towns’ businesses.” As a taxpayer of Tyrone, I expect the council members including Mayor pro tem Furr to enforce the town ordinances in good and bad economic times. To do otherwise is a violation of her oath of office and she and any other council member that refuses to enforce the town ordinances should be removed from office.

How hard would it be for the owners or operators of Marnelle in Fayetteville to enforce safety laws? If you’re going to post speed limit signs in the community, then find a way to put some actions behind the signs. Also, how many arrests have to made for driving without an operator’s license before you can remove them completely? One kid has been hit in the community. Will it take a kid being killed before someone enforces the law?

CLM Rate Increase for PTC

Pay attention to your trash co. bill. Just got a 12% increase. No advance notice. Was just told "all customers have been given the increase due to an increase in landfill costs". Even with a justified increase of any amount, no company deserves my money unless I am notified in advance of a rate increase. Time to fire them and use another co.

Now since the management of Fayette County are conservatives, this land fill increase for your trash IS NOT A TAX INCREASE!

It is a "FEE, as they call it.
It takes the same money to pay for it, and you can't just dump your garbage anywhere else, so you have to have it!

Other things that aren't tax increases are BONDS, SPLOSTS, Water & sewer increases, run-off fees, golf cart fees, school fees--the ones you pay that are not in your school taxes (or are they fees?),book fees, rolling stop fees, dark tail-light-fees, speeding fees, DUI fees, emergency vehicle fees, 911 fees, phone fees, license fees (other than drivers), tag fee, tag property fee, boat fees, trailer fees, swimming fees, tennis fees, dog and cat fees, sports fees, and of course, marriage fees.
I don't think that mil rate fees and property value fees are taxes either since they do go up and down (mils up, value down but not enough).

Good luck finding a replacement

Ironically I got to CLM because of an unannounced rate increase by Waste Management a year or so ago. Haven't checked lately, but I think CLM is still the least expensive. Getting a little tiring changing services since I just dropped Wells Fargo because of loss of features I had with Wachovia online banking. Also because of higher scheduled fees for screw ups even though I never encountered any of them.

Thanks for the feedback. CLM told me today they haven't had a rate increase for 2 years. So? You just don't slap one on your customers without any notice. It's not only a way too huge increase, it's the lack of customer service in not notifying you of it. I can (barely) tolerate rate increases, just don't take my money for granted and feel the service doesn't have to go with it. If I have to pay the same increase with another company, I will. CLM needs to feel the financial backlash when they do stupid stuff like this. In Sept. 07 when I went with CLM, I paid $33. New rate this bill...$50.28. Thats almost a 54% increase in just over 3 years. Do I look that stoopid that I wouldn't notice this? (Don't answer that). I'll let you know what I find out.

Interesting, $50.28? I seen that my CLM bill went up 10% to $57.27 for one pick-up per week for 3 months of service. The reason stated was to cover rising operational costs and regulatory compliance. Are you in PTC or the county?

My last bill, paid earlier this month, was $51.28. That is with the senior discount. Starting to look like their rate schedule is "pick a number between $50 and $60". I don't think it has been as long as 3 years since I switched, but I also started at rate in the low $30s for three months pickups.

for PTC (for what it's worth). (Quarterly-1 p/u wk.)
Republic $52.50 Activation fee $15.00 no senior disc. No increase in "a long time" (would not specify when the last one was)

Integrated Waste $46.00 no senior disc. no activation fee
They are the only locally owned co. (Fairburn), started up in 2/2009 have had no rate increases (other than an increase to customers of a co. they bought out) They have no increases planned. Would only do so if the cost of gasoline goes up.

Waste Mgt. -total waste of time-had to call twice-put on hold, muzak, got a person in Smyrna, she had to come back on the line 2 times to tell me to continue to hold, then connected to someone else in the sales dept. They only service 2 HOA's here- Planterra and Ashton Park. No other residential. PTC should take them off the list on their web site.

Update: Just called CLM to cancel service-they offered to match the competition if I stayed. I told them I got a rate from another co. that will save me almost $28.00 year and if they had offered to match when I called last Sat., I would have stayed. I told them no advance notice of rate increase was the game changer, with price offered being a match now. Compete and your company will retain customers. Simple as that.

CLM trash was delisted from NASDAQ recently but with the help of good old Goldman Sachs and Macquire Capital loans went private.
At least they aren't controlled by the Mafia as was the case for many garbage companies in the past.

Getting in with a small fee and then very quickly, (1-2 years) as dictated by the financiers, raise the price heavily, is a standard ploy.

We do have about three companies we can use don't we? Guess the prices aren't fixed since our town government is supposed to keep up with this.

However, this is the reason some cities do their own garbage pick-ups!

Hey Spyglass...

I was on the record as predicting that the Democrats would retain control of the House and Senate too. Turns out I was half-right.

The Democrats lost 60 seats in the house, including 26 out of 54 seats held by "Blue Dog Democrats".

Give credit where credit is due: The Republican strategy of "Party First, Country Second" worked for them election-wise.

Unfortunately, now they'll have to actually govern, which has been the Repubs' Achilles heel historically.

BTW, what do you think of Cal Thomas column this week...should "Job 1" of a Republican house be to extend tax cuts for the richest 1%?

Tea Party: The GOP outreach program for the special-education set. Now with more fascism!

Bacon, Taxes/spending should be cut across the board..

1/3/5/10%, pick number and just do it. The Senate will attempt to block anything meaningful that comes across the board in this area.

Honestly, I've always liked the way our Govt works when it "gridlocked" so to say.

Will the newly elected GOP's be the old breed, or the new breed? That will tell the tale.

I've made money under all administrations, I'm not all that partial to one or the other. I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal.

I will say, that until we get this "foreclosure" thing under control, this Country will continue to suffer. Big time. I know folks, good folks, developers even :), that have been hurt a lot. These folks provided a LOT of jobs to good people, and they are all hurting.

It didn't help the Dems when they basically "crammed" Govt Healthcare down the Countries throat. I think that cost them more than anything.

Mr. Kawfi simply went off the deep end?

You mentioned the type of bike you ride, would you remind me again what that make is? You said it was high end.

carbon,

Perhaps Jeffc has been granted the "power" from his most highest? There are a few that have that ability. Us common folk - including CHR$ - just don't rank.

I beg yur pardon, sir.
I have been getting along with second degree murder lately. Some even first degree murder.

I suspect Jeff simply edited it out after thinking, maybe!

Wasn't what Juan said something like: "every time I see a black man walking around me I get scared!"

Or, "if in a convenience store and one or two come in, I run immediately!"

Or, "if I see a short man in a funny looking little round cap with no bill on my plane, I am afraid someone on there may get ticked off!" "I get off."

Or, "if I am in a smokey bar and a fellow weighing 300 pounds comes in with tattoos all over him and a beard and is drunk, I think "red-nek" trouble and I run!"

Only I say it on TV for millions to hear! And it is a good way to get a FOX two-million dollar contract!

I am so sorry about your son. My prayers are with you. AND.... they are with every person that read what you wrote and did not respond. That would be anyone that thinks that yard burning ban, FBOE "support staff" or talking about thumping music is a much better topic. I am surprised that no one has had any kind words for you. No matter what religion... you are a mother. Bless you

I was out of range for awhile Cyclist, monitoring various environments: warming & cooling climates, political (both realistic & otherwise), religious (both realistic & otherwise), and last but not least, the lack of civility of certain Citizen bloggers as seen from a long distance, which makes the damage appear not as bad.

I never use the words "triumph of the human spirit," because I don't know what that means! Could you explain, please?

Had they been left down there would that have been a "failure of the human spirit?"

It was pure luck:
Our technology: NASA, GeoTech, and others told them what to do
They weren't pinned in a small enclosure or under any rocks and dirt
They were "miners" and not subject to claustrophobia-especially not pinned
They had tunnels to run in, for bathroom use, and a shower fall of natural water.
They were furnished food and water and medicine through a small 3" bore hole, along with radio and communications as to what to do---courtesy of USA.

All the publicity by Chilean mine owners and rulers is to cover up how the miners are really treated on a yearly basis.

The project was successful, but not due to Viva Chile! ...and all that jazz, er, hype!

What were shotgun riders paid in the 1800s? Take a lot to act that big of a fool.
I don't know what a "some else," or a "Wanger's Ride...." or a "going drive through," is.

So I will decline.

I would like to commend you kids for leaving all your trash on the ground in the parking lot, after all, why use a trash can when wherever you look there's the ground. Next time bring your Mothers to clean up after you, unless of course they're the ones who taught you to be pigs.

We force the teenagers to meet in parking lots, on the cart paths, in basements, instead of building them a real, supervised entertainment and study center in the center of PTC.

I would vote for a SPLOST for that. Can we use the money we have from the last SPLOST to start it? I think so!

The adults have 43 bars, 76 restaurants, the amphitheater, the tennis center, and umpteen golf courses!

The teens have NOTHING, and we don't care cause we don't want to watch them.

Selfish.

These kids were tailgating before the FCHS and WHS football game. It doesn't matter if they have a place to go or not, that doesn't excuse being a pig and leaving a mess for someone else to clean up. Besides, theses kids don't live in PTC, believe it or not, there are other cities in Fayette besides PTC.

There's plenty to do for the kids, or are you saying the kids can't go to your tennis center, or play golf, or eat in restaurants. They can study at home or in the libraries, play sports, be active in the clubs at the schools. If they are laying around getting in trouble, it's by their own choice.

Maybe they can change the bike laws to they can ride on the roads as long as ride a wheelie the whole time. I don't know about the rest of you but i like the smell of burnt wood and leaves, just makes it feel like fall.

breeze is passing wind

Anyone can make an occasional typographical error, especially in a fury of emotion, but the breezy person is clearly, not only marginally literate but also, ignorant (meaning "not knowing") of what he/she spews. And if he/she thinks the "average" person is unemployed, then mathematical ability and statistical savvy are also in question. Oh, yes, we teachers and staff are grateful for having a job...we do work for a pittance, we have been stolen from by the BOE, and have had shoved down our throats the "21st Century Classroom" materials that are cheaply made, yet heartily funded, and only sometimes function as they are purported. Yet, we endure these insults, not to mention the politically charged "don't make waves" undertones of our administrators, and we do NOT take to heart the idiocy of cretins like breezy-whatever. You know why? We happen to like to share and help. Also, here in Fayette County, we have a laudable amount of parent support, which is essential to effective education of youngsters and offers realistic, realizable hope for maximizing human potential.
Oh, yes, we like our paychecks, too, but, c'mon, given the eruptions of the breezy ilk, my hope is dwindling...maybe we should consider construction work.

Spoiled....

Do you know how much the people of this city complain? From the bumping loud music to the stench of the burning ban being lifted. These are all issued that people deal with when you have neighbors. What makes you an expert on how things should or should not be? It's all life. And everyone has to deal with it. It's Metro Atlanta. Not Utah. There is a large portion of people here that are completely spoiled. It really is amazing to watch.

The lack of knowledge by many about bikes/roadways..

etc is funny to me. Talk of licensing, etc. Talk about ignorant. If you disagree with the law, get it changed, or just slow down and move over for the bikers. I ride a bike on the paths, etc. The paths are no place for a road bike, especially at the speeds they can travel.

FCBOE should realize potential for loss

I am in my fifth year with the FCBOE as a paraprofessional. As with many other parapros - maybe even most - I have a college degree. I am embarrassed that, even with deducting for summers off and breaks during the school year, my current salary is just above what the average GA dropout makes. (See http://nbcscorecard.greatschools.org/schools/GA/3879.html) Though I believe our teachers work very hard and deserve the raise they received last week, my fellow support staff and I work very hard, as well. I do not choose to work again in corporate America and am not expecting to be compensated as if I did; however, we support staff shared in a 4 1/2% across-the-board pay cut last year with the teachers and I would think it only reasonable to expect that we would share in the step raise the teachers received last week. The school board should understand that this County's schools will suffer the loss of valuable and committed employees if there is no attempt at equitable treatment for ALL.

pay

Hey why can you people just be happy you have a job right now and stop complaining about the pay raise you did not receive this year, you still have a job, you still receive a pay check, you still have better benefits than your average worker has and you still get the whole summer off with pay, have you sat down and thought about all your neighbors and others that have been laid off or let go because of this economy.Last time I looked you have a good secure job

If Fayette county schools are so straped for money someone please tell me why each school has so many Custodians this completely a waste of money that could be put to use in other areas of education in our school system.
