Fayette tries to cap carbon — in its water

Fayette County is trying to impose its own carbon cap — not on energy but on one of its water reservoirs.

To address problems with carbon levels at the South Fayette Water Treatment Plant, the Fayette County Water System wants to test two different treatment processes for potential future implementation.

The carbon levels do not pose a health threat, but the county is required to come into compliance with state regulations that call for a 35 percent removal of the total organic carbon compared to the water source. Read More»

Coweta Commission approves Gordon Road church expansion

Coweta County commissioners last week unanimously approved a conditional use permit for White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church on Gordon Road for a campus expansion that includes a 20,000 square-foot building, a 7,500 square-foot classroom building, recreation complex and 274 additional parking spaces. Pension payment approved by Coweta commissioners

It was that time of the year to ante up the contribution for the defined benefits pension plan for county employees. Coweta County commissioners last week approved budgeted funds of $2.2 million.

Commissioners voted to approve the $2,245,878 annual lump sum contribution that covers a total of 387 participants.

The plan calls for participants to contribute 2.75 percent of salary to the plan which is matched by the county. This provides one-fourth of the benefit cost for the plan’s 15-year projected obligation. Read More»

County cutting budget by $1 million as taxes slide with lower property values

UPDATED print version (Tuesday, May 25, 2010) — Fayette County government will have to get by next year on $1 million less than this year, but there will be no projected property tax increase, according to the preliminary $73.3 million budget recommended to the County Commission Monday morning.

The budget will not require a property tax increase, said County Administrator Jack Krakeel, though the county will be taking approximately a $2 million hit in property taxes alone. Read More»

Coweta purchases new ambulance

Coweta County commissioners May 18 added to the county’s ambulance fleet with the approval of an $89,996 low bid by Peach State Ambulance. All bids included the trade of an older ambulance.

County Administrative and Operations Director Tom Corker in a May 5 letter informed commissioners that the low bid came from Peach State Ambulance, Inc. The $89,996 bid for a 2010 Chevrolet G4500 Type III ambulance with a retail of $109,996 came with a trade-in allowance of $20,000 for the county’s 2005 type III ambulance. Maxwell concerned about quality of town’s pipes, potential rate increases

As requested by the Brooks Town Council, the Fayette County Commission has agreed for the county’s water system to assume operations of the rural town’s water system.

Thursday’s vote was not unanimous, as Commissioner Eric Maxwell said he was concerned about the future financial ramifications of the deal, which allows Brooks to maintain ownership of the system. Read More»

Skandalakis’ budget approved with 0% increase

The Coweta County Commission at the May 4 meeting approved the FY 2010-2011 budget for District Attorney Pete Skandalakis that included no increases over the current year. Coweta’s portion of the judicial circuit’s budget totaled $529,363.

Skandalakis in his budget request to commissioners said the proposal included no increase over last year, including in staff or pay increases, even though crime is escalating and caseloads are increasing due to the recession. Read More»
