Letters to the Editor

This is how Fayette government works?

On the agenda at the Jan. 12, 2012 Fayette County Commission meeting, item # 7 said: “Approval of the Water Committee’s recommendation to insert an informational flyer into customers’ January water bills concerning the Parks and Recreation Department’s Needs Assessment Survey.”

The commissioners voted in favor of the proposal.

Fayette citizens received the insert in their last water bill. The insert read:

New BoE chairman must answer publicly

Letter to Chairman Presberg and board members:

We Fayette County citizens are dismayed by recent reports concerning how Mr. [Leonard] Presberg found his way onto the Board of Education, how he was designated chairman and by the board’s shocking vote not to defend Fayette County’s district wide voting system versus the NAACP’s lawsuit.

We are further dismayed by Mr. Presberg’s now publicly reported limited qualifications, his background and his involvement with fringe and questionable organizations. Read More»

Transportation sales tax vote easy choice because of skewed spending

We’re going to have a unique opportunity this summer.

Usually we vote for politicians who vote on taxes, but this July, we taxpayers can directly vote against an increase in our sales tax from 6 cents to 7 cents (that’s a 17 percent increase).

I’m referring, of course, to a referendum by all 10 counties in the Atlanta Special District to raise money for transportation projects. Read More»

Public should demand that legislators support tougher ethics bill

Public momentum for a return to fiscal responsibility, limited government, and ethical behavior in government is running full force. Watchdog groups and conservative organizations in Georgia are demanding that it is time for robust legislation on ethics and accountability from our leaders. Read More»

Haddix wrong about Imker again

The latest exchange of letters to the editor about Mayor Haddix and city vehicles is an atrocity.

It’s clear the mayor accidentally misspoke when he said Council Member Imker wanted to take 50 police vehicles out of service. Does the mayor have it in him to correct this mistake?

After over a year of observing our mayor at council meetings I have concluded he is incapable of stepping to the plate. He will relentlessly continue the negative to the point of pulling our city into the gutter in the minds of those who read our newspapers outside our city. Read More»

Mayor should stop attacks

speak only truthfulness and facts – all the facts without the misrepresentation of using only partial data.

Last week Mayor Haddix actually admitted he knew what he wrote two weeks earlier, about the police vehicles, was inaccurate.

He is trying, for some unknown reason, to discredit Councilman Imker and speak of him in some derogatory way. In most instances over the last year, he has started the attacks with his letters to the editor, usually with misinformation or inaccurate facts and almost always against Councilman Imker. Why? Mayor praises PTC Fire Department

The annual Fire Department installation dinner was held on Saturday. It was graciously sponsored by the Peachtree City Rotary Club, to whom I extend my thanks and appreciation. My wife and I were honored to attend.

While I will cover their accomplishments, along with the Police Department’s, in the State of the City address to the Rotary in March, it is no wonder why they are honored repeatedly on a nationwide and state basis. Read More»

‘Monster’ Obama betrays Catholics

Several weeks ago I wrote a letter praising the Obama administration for denying approval to sell Plan B over the counter without age restriction. I did this in the spirit of true compromise, of finding common ground with my political opponents, a theme oft spoken of by Obama in his 2008 campaign.

How stupid and naive I feel now. Obama is now requiring all organizations except strictly religious institutions (meaning, churches themselves) to provide free insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs like Plan B. Read More»

Presberg responds to editor’s opinion

[Editor’s note: Chairman Leonard Presberg was invited last week to respond unedited to a Cal Beverly opinion column about his vote and his election as chairman. The following is his email response.]

If any citizen in our county has any questions or concerns about our school system or decisions coming before the board, I would be pleased to discuss.

Please contact me at presberg.leonard@mail.fcboe.org.

Leonard Presberg, Chairman

Fayette County Board of Education

Tyrone, Ga.

Presberg deserves a shot at leading BoE

I find the write-up by the editor and publisher of The Citizen, Cal Beverly, interesting but slanted towards one political (or single community) mindset. However, it has confirmed my suspicion about the columnists and letter writers who are frequently published in The Citizen.

Mr. Beverly is almost apoplectic about the settlement reached by the Fayette Board of Education and the county NAACP regarding district-wide voting. Read More»
