Well I don't know the defects of "flat" enough to vote for that, but I know I do not read those of one word lines!
Change is good you know? If it turns out badly it can be remedied.

I have no idea what "Flat is very egalitarian" actually means but I love the use of the word "egalitarian"
Haven't seen or used that word since the 70's. Johnny Fever stuff, I think.

I have been to Harvard. Saw them play Davidson once. I also attended the campus of University of Michigan for a one week course in efficiency.
Our President was the Constitutional Professor at Harvard, I think! Knows it by heart and understands every word.
"Well regulated militias" means National Guard, I believe. Otherwise what we have are millions of TEAS and Duffus people carrying automatic rifles.
Our only current problem is that most of our Governors don't have sense enough or the guts to know how to use a National Guard. Kennedy and Eisenhower did, but not the Governors of MS and Arkansas. They were Unregulated militia people!

Cal.. I know what you mean
on who reply's to whom here, however just when a discussion gets really going it narrows down to an unreadable mess.. I don't know which is best. Maybe a new page once certain parameters are met to keep it from narrowing?

You could opt for a "third way" solution. Keep the postings flat for readability and stop renumbering the comments. Then we could look at the numbers on the comments and tell the order of responses.

SL, there has been much discussion among me and my web coding folks about this subject.
The answer is that the only choice we have is a distinct tradeoff from the indented style.
The "flat" alternative we have (and that's the only alternative we have in this software) means that every comment is equal -- no indenting and thus no way to tell who is relying to whom {Freudian slip — I meant *replying*}. With multiple replies, and replies to replies to replies, confusion can reign.
Flat is very egalitarian -- nothing and nobody stands out -- so maybe the progressives among our posters would cheer at that change.
The argument to let it stay the way it is now is classic conservatism: It's been this way from the beginning, and we are all used to it on this site.
I suppose the libertarian way would be for each poster to choose for him/herself whether indented or flat. Unfortunately, libertarian was not included on this software's ballot.
I put it to you and our posters: Should we go progressive or stay conservative (in our comment threading, I mean)?
