My Vision of America

What is my vision of America? Well let me say first that the America I remember is not the America I live in today.
Maybe it’s just my memory you know that “good ole days” thing but it still remains the truth.
I remember my father never locking the doors.
I remember as a kid have free run of the neighborhood, riding my bike until the Sun set then scrambling home before my father’s voice could be heard yelling my name.
I remember spending my weekends “camping” on the banks of the Saugahatchee Creek fishing all day and running trotlines at night.
I remember going to the drive-in with my date watching some cheesy movie because it was cheap and frankly didn’t care about.

This is the America I remember. 35 years later it has all changed. Kids can’t walk home from School without the fear of being abducted. We all have Alarms on our homes and many go armed everywhere… I know I am one.

So what happened?

Well I could blame it on the music which demeans women and praises violence.
I could blame it on the movies full of sex and well violence again.
I could blame it on the video games where death comes as quickly as the new life does and the best scores are the ones with the most kills.

There’s a lot to blame things on, but I think the real blame is us. You and I, maybe not individually but as a people in general.

We have allowed Television to become the baby sitters, where school is the total social interaction of the day and Teachers become the parents. Where our Children learn social values from their peers or the internet instead of the parents. Where our, so called leaders, almost openly lie to us, steal from us and then tell us we should just accept it and move on.
Americans have become dependents instead of independent where Government has become the nanny for us to give us “things” to care for us.

This is not the America I remember and I am afraid my child will never see.

Shared many of the same

Shared many of the same memories! I agree - in order to return to that America - we need to see the value in some of those family activities that we don't seem to have the time for anymore. I wish I had a valid answer. However, I don't agree that Americans have become dependents. I just think we've come to value 'things' more than family and friends. My grandchild just spent a wonderful afternoon with family friends fishing, playing, eating home-cooked food, etc. And you're right, this type of 'entertainment' was the norm - not 'special' in the old America. These friends live on a farm - and have protected the values of the 'old' America - and not given in to the worship of 'things'.

Steve, I have found that many of those values and "ways of life" still exist and are practiced in many parts of Montana and Wyoming. Now why would that be?

Possibly because when in Wyoming or Montana - families practice enjoying and improving the environment and improving relationships with one another. Members of our church spend the 'summer' in Montana - and that is their goal; To enjoy God's earth and one another. Do ya think?

Why have we lost our way? I suspect it's because many live without a code employing these three simple words:

Honor

Commitment

Integrity

Cy & "3 words"

I attribute that partially to more than a decade of leaders of our country who either did not possess those 3 character traits (Clinton,Obama) or if they did (Bush) simply did not inspire others to pursue those traits. I still believe many,if not most, members of our military possess those traits.

S. Lindsey- That is now a distant vision.

I remember that America too. But it's gone and never to return. What happened? Several things I think. First the media. Back in the day there were some things the media didn't report. Like affairs by our leaders. For example many of them knew about JFK, RFK, and Marilyn Monroe but had the class not to report it. Today's media will not only report these and other things but will embellish them to get ratings. Thereby making things seem even worse than they are. They also seem to enjoy providing ideas for some that wish to copy events that they've seen on tv.

Second, parents today are much more lenient while raising their kids. Many kids don't learn respect or to follow rules until the school or police get involved. Sometimes that is too late. And the school is very limited by what they can do now days.

Third, kids spend more "social" time on a computer than they do interacting with other humans. Much of this time is spent playing games with others that involve killing and such. I mean it really does take a village to raise a child. And now that village is online.

Add in the movies and music that they listen too and how can we be surprised?
