What are we as a Nation? Are we Free or are we something else?
rmoc said this in another post and it bears repeating...
In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior: "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.”
“A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."
America is a vastly different Country than any other Country in the World. Our History, development and growth has been like no one else in the World. We are a younger Nation, but yet lead the World in Technology, health care, wealth and more. We accept Freedom and personal Liberty as a matter of life. In most Countries people do not have a choice. Most of us (used to be more) accept personal responsibility and recognize that we are responsible for our own welfare and not the Government.
Even our Cousins across the “Pond” have lost or maybe never had that ideal..
In a recent report from Tom Brokaw on “Why we love the British” and why we (Progressives) hate America.. (Ok I added that last part in) Brokaw declared : "In one of our election years, the British watch America with a sense of bewilderment."
Left-wing BBC anchor Katty Kay sniffed: "When we talk about God, guns, and government, those are the three big things we don't understand."
She then lamented: "The role of government here [in the United States] is much more complicated; people don't want it in America. In Britain, we expect government to provide things for us."
…and that right there is the problem.. THEY EXPECT the Government to provide “things”… WE meaning the US grew away from that ideal a long time ago, but yet even now it rears its ugly head again.
We should not “expect” Government to provide things we should expect Government to secure our safety and guarantee our Freedoms.
Remember government cannot give to anyone anything that it does not first take from someone else.
John F. Kennedy had it right when he said: “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country”
It is not the job of the Government to “provide” us with “things”.. However, too many Americans are quiet happy to stand in line with their hands out asking “Where’s mine?” With almost half of America having no Tax Liability, more Americans on Food Stamps then ever and record number of Americans on disability, we are quickly becoming something we were not meant to be… Dependents.
