I am not a person that could be labeled a political activist be anyone I know; I tend to take political things with a grain of salt. Until this past Monday I have never had a reason to write to the newspaper. On Monday, when I opened my mailbox I found an unsigned two paged Xeroxed typed attack letter that was so ugly in tone that I can’t bring myself to repeat some of the vile things in it. Worse still was that a couple things in it were specific and outright lies that I know to be that personally.

Ironically my son received an email Monday night that was forwarded several times before reaching his email box at home containing the same information; he had the ability to reply directly to the person who sent it to him, I could not.

That letter began with this statement “I noticed you had a Wayne Hannah sign displayed. I wanted to share some information on our Sheriff you may not be aware of.” Well, I can’t tell that person directly what I know to be incorrect about their letter, but I can say here what I know to be true and what I have learned to be the whole story behind their half truths.

Let me be clear, I have learned what the Georgia Open Records Act is and how it works. I have received information for two of the five requests I have made checking the information in this coward’s letter left in my mailbox unsigned. I will post my information on the remaining as soon as I receive it.

The person who wanted to educate on our Sheriff said that Sheriff Hannah had promoted his wife Captain Hannah to second in command at the Sheriff’s Office and both of them have received numerous pay raises in the last 4 years. Bull. The truth of the matter is, and it is clearly documented in Fayette County Government records that are available for anyone to see, that the now retired Sheriff Randall Johnson promoted Lieutenant Deborah Hannah to Captain in November, 2008; Sheriff Hannah did not take office until January, 2009. Captain Hannah is not second in command at the Sheriff’s Office, she is only 1 of 11 Captains at the Sheriff’s Office; she is in charge of something called Youth Services which has 5 School Resource Officers and 2 DARE Officers. She has been a DARE Officer working with kids for nearly 20 years at the Sheriff’s Office—seems like a logical job to me but clearly not second in command.

The salary Sheriff Hannah makes today, and yes it is available by law for anyone to see, is the exact same today as it was in July 2008. His salary did not increase one penny when he became Sheriff and he has not had a pay raise in 5 years. The only pay raise Captain Hannah has received has been one pay for performance salary increase given by the Board of Commissioner’s to every eligible employee and that was less than 2 percent. Sheriff Hannah was not eligible for that raise. In case you are interested Mr./Mrs. Unsigned Letter Person, Sheriff Hannah is not even the highest paid person at the Sheriff’s Office (so much for your thought he was taking care of himself).

I just got the accident report on a wreck Captain Hannah was involved in. It is true she was in a wreck and the other driver was hurt. What was left out of Mr./Mrs. Unsigned Letter Person's letter was that Captain Hannah was hurt too. The baby you referred to was not listed has being injured. Captain Hannah was driving fast; she had her blue lights and siren on. She was going to an alarm at her home, as were other deputies, At least 4 other cars pulled over for Captain Hannah at the place where the wreck happened. The Georgia State Patrol investigated the accident and issued a traffic ticket to the other driver and not Captain Hannah; The State Patrol said the accident was not her fault. Two accident investigation groups looked at the wreck and said that the accident was not her fault, one was the Sheriff’s Office and the other was from Fayette County. There was not a conflict of interest, Sheriff Hannah might have had some influence over the Sheriff’s Office Accident Panel but the Georgia State Patrol and a Fayette County Accident Panel—I doubt that.

Oh, the law suit. I have not see it. But the Attorney representing the driver who got the ticket in the wreck is a personal injury Lawyer in Macon. According to the Fayette County Clerk of Court's Office there is no active law suit on file related to this wreck. I will be trying to find out more on that.

I don’t know if Sheriff’s Hannah’s challenger is behind the letter in my mail box or to the email my son received but if he is not, he should come out and repudiate the statements made in this letter to me and the email to my son and others. The letter was two pages long and there is more I want to address later and I will.

Mr./Mrs. Unsigned Letter Person, yes I had a yard sign supporting Wayne Hannah that I asked for. Sheriff Hannah, can I have one of those BIG Signs to put out in my front yard?

More to come.

Ugly and Negative Campaign Letter in Sheriff's Race

One of my neighbors with a Sheriff Hannah sign is his yard got a copy of the same unsigned letter as I did Monday. He is a lifelong resident of Fayette County and a big fan of Retired Sheriff Johnson who I don’t know at all but have heard many good things about over the years. My neighbor is as ticked off as I am about being targeted by Barry Babb supporters. He said that during the last Sheriff’s election, retiring Sheriff Johnson had told him that Sheriff Hannah should fire Barry Babb and the other deputy who ran for office after the election but he did not. I asked him if he was sure about that and he said yes, ask Randall yourself; so I did. Sure enough Sheriff Johnson told me himself that Barry Babb should have been fired.

Sheriff Johnson also thinks the campaign signs of Barry Babb in a Fayette County Sheriff’s Office uniform are misleading since he doesn’t work here but is working at the Atlanta Police Department. I hadn’t thought of it, but now that I have, I agree. In Mr./Mrs. Unsigned Letter Person’s letter, Sheriff Hannah’s challenger’s strong sense of ethics was mentioned. I don’t think his wearing a Fayette County Sheriff’s Uniform in a campaign picture is ethical sense he quit and doesn’t work there anymore. But hey, that’s my opinion

Now you are a Hannah supporter targeting Barry Babb. I do not believe that Randall Johnson said they should be fired. Why should Hannah have been the only one allowed to run for sheriff??? Maybe Hannah should have been fired because he ran against Babb and the other deputy. Doesn't make sense, does it?

Ugly and Negative Campaign Letter in Sheriff's Race

I'm sorry if I did not make it clear in my last post. I do support Sheriff Hannah and got started blogging after getting an ugly campaign letter placed in my mailbox because I had a Sheriff Hannah sign in my yard. I went into great detail about that at the begining of this series of blogs. The letter said they were a supporter of Sheriff Hannah's challenger and said several things that I have learned directly myself that were untrue in some cases and slanted half turths in others. I don't know if Sheriff Hannah's challenger wrote the letter or one of his supporters; they didn't sign the letter.

I can say that it (the letter) caused me to become an amatuer detective trying to get to the bottom of the things said in the letter. I'm not going to address any of those things until I see the proof my self. If I print my personal opinion, I'll say that directly at the start of that part.

But, to clarify my previous statement for you. Sheriff Johnson was talking to me about what he thought Sheriff Hannah should have done AFTER the last election was over and Sheriff Hannah won; not before.

When they were campaigning during the last election, Sheriff Johnson was still in office and had not yet retired. Sheriff Johnson made all three deputies who were running for Sheriff take a leave of absense while they were campaigning. Sheriff Hannah and the two other deputies did not get paid for several months while they were campaigning to succeed Sheriff Johnson.

PERSONAL OPINION - If you live essentially paycheck-to-paycheck, 4 or so months without one can cause financial hardships unless you plan and save for it. That's hard to do of you if you have some big expensive project you just started or were in the middle of when you had to stop drawing a paycheck and all of your money was going in to it. Can't use campaign money to pay living or personal expenses.

Once the election was over and Sheriff Hannah won, all three came back to work doing what they were doing until January, 2009 when Sheriff Johnson retired and Sheriff Hannah took office.

Sheriff Johnson told me that once Sheriff Hannah won, that was when he started to encourage Sheriff Hannah (elect) to fire the other two and Sheriff Hannah decided not to do.

I'm sorry if it sounded like I was attacking Sheriff Hannah's challenger; that was not my intent. I was and am only trying to learn the whole truth and repeat it based on a really ugly and suprisingly untrue letter put in my mailbox at home by someone simply because I had one of Sheriff Hannah's campaign signs in my yard that I asked for.

JSpringhouse & campaign letter`

You might consider this also: In this era of dirty campaign tricks, it is entirely possible that the letter was drafted by a Hannah supporter just to make Babb look bad. I don't know either man and have no signs in my yard.

I did consider that. The fact that the exact same information was in a email my son received was a significant fact in my thoughts.

The email was forwarded to him by somweone else and that had occurred multiple times. The original email that had the same information in it as the letter in my mailbox. The person who created the original email listed their name since I assume it was to supporters of Sheriff Hannah's challenger; I recognise three of those names as supporters of Sheriff hannah's challenger.

In any event, I don't know that person and I did not get the email so I am not planning on repeating that person's name.

I forgot to say this. Sheriff Johnson still goes to Chick Fil A Dwarf House in Fayetteville for breakfast a lot. That's where I saw him and asked about all this. Please ask him yourself, don't rely on my word. If I have learned anything from this experience, it's to see the paperwork myself or get it directly from the person involved.

Sheriff Hannah has his cell phone listed on hs campaign web site and even on the campaign ad I see on the edge of my computer screen as I am typing this...

Hannah at Dwarf House? Show me how he gets in

through that little front door. That might make a cool YouTube thing.

I'm voting for Hannah and the lady judges.
Also the lady commissioners.
After all, what can go wrong after the dunderhead men have been in charge?

jerryspringer: Not Believable

It is kind of odd that this jerry springer guy is the only one who has heard these negative stories. I haven't heard the Hannah or Babb camps say anything negative about each other and I have listened to both of them.

They may disagree about some things when it comes to tackling crime but I have yet to hear either of them say anything bad about the other.

This sounds like the wild negative ramblings of a person with an empty life.

Skyspy,

I just began taking an active part in blogging last week. When I began this string of comments, I started by explaining how I came to start commenting.

Briefly, I was asked if I wanted a Sheriff Hannah sign in my yard and said yes. I had an unsigned letter put in my mailbox specificlly stating the letter was being left for me because I had the yard sign. My son received an email forwarded through several people that also included him; it had the same information.

I did not appreciate being singled out by someone who saw my sign and put an unsigned document in my mailbox maligning the person I supported.

Like you (I suspect), I don't like being told untrue things. I also don't like rude behaviors; the letter in my mailbox and email my son got were rude. I did a quick check on a couple of things in the letter and found them to be untrue. I have noticed a lot of blogs have nothing more than gossip or unsupported comments. I decided to check into this and see what I could verify for my self as true and untrue.

So, except where I have started out with the phrase personal opinion, my comments have been based on actual legal documents like when I used the open records act to get a copy of a accident report.

The open records act means the original document has to be produced (.10 cents a page I might add). I chose to look for my self and would encourage you instead of mocking me to look for yourself.

I don't know that I will have anything to blog about after I have finished with this subject but I don't intend to keep going on after I am finished. I do have a life, I was just offended by something. I'm glad you didn't have to get the letter or email. Good for you. Looks like you have been blogging since 11/08/2005. Blog on my friend.

That's a neat wrap-up, but seems to me that, unless you have absolute proof of who wrote the letter & email, you are engaging in the very same activity you decry! Wonder if you were the only Hannah supporter who got such a letter & email? If it was some sort of active negative smear campaign, would seem that it would be widespread, yet no one else has raised a red flag. Maybe other recipients (if there were any) looked at it, said "rubbish" and put it in the circular file.

Unrelated to the unsigned letter I received in my mailbox the last week was a signed pledge and card from Sheriff Hannah’s challenger that I received yesterday on the windshield of my car at the Doctor’s Office.

The first thing I noticed was that Sheriff Hannah’s Challenger was pointing to a lot of crime that had occurred in Fayette County. If I counted right it referenced 11 crimes or crime issues. I took note of the fact that of the 11 crime or issues, only two occurred out side of a Fayette County City and therefore were a responsibility of Sheriff Hannah. One was a shooting at a party in a neighborhood attended by more than 200 people and no one was a witness to the actual shooting. According to Sheriff Hannah, it is still under investigation. The second was a shooting that occurred in South Fayette County and the Sheriff’s Office arrested the shooters; why is that an issue for the Sheriff’s Challenger?

I have been directly told by a supporter of Sheriff Hannah’s challenger that the Police Department in the City of Fayetteville and City of Peachtree City feel that Sheriff Hannah does not support them. Easy enough to check on and it turns out to be yet another untrue allegation.

I called the Fayetteville and Peachtree City Police Departments today and asked one question to both Chiefs. I asked them if it was true that the Sheriff’s Office did not support their department. I had to leave a message but both Chief’s called me back. Their answer was short and to the point. They both said that such a statement was false. Sheriff Hannah and the Sheriff’s Office support their department with anything they need or ask for.

I have yet to find one bit of information coming out of Sheriff Hannah’s challenger’s campaign that has been truthful, accurate, or not misleading.

I am waiting for one more response to an open records request to finish my review of the misleading, and in some places completely untrue, statements relating to Sheriff Hannah’s challenger’s demotion and reassignment four years ago. I have been told what is in the information I have requested and once I see it, I think the Challenger will have some explaining to do.

Once again, you are stooping to the level of the alleged person leaving a letter in your box. YOU are pointing your finger at Barry Babb without evidence of him having anything to do with this letter. Do you have proof that Barry Babb has even seen this letter?

Where are the facts and documentation?

I'd love to see a news story on this inaccurate info circulating and the accusations made in this letter that was apparently illegally stuffed in selected mailboxes. The story should present the facts and clear up misinformation being circulated by Barry's supporters so voters can know the truth and then make a better informed decision.

accurate reporting from the media as well. Thank you to Jspringer for doing the homework that most media outlets are not willing to do. It's sad that as a regular citizen I know more accurate information than what the newspapers print. I do applaud The Citizen for being more objective to the police departments lately but there is still a lot of room for growth.

Springhouse & Sheriff's Pay Raise

I've seen reports saying that Sheriff Hannah went before the County Commissioners and asked for a $12,000 annual pay raise, giving the reason that his current salary was less than the job he left to run for Sheriff. The Commissioners voted to give him the pay raise. Are you saying that isn't true?

To everyone

Givin credit to Jspringhouse for supposedly finding out the truth for you about the letter/email that was supposedly placed or sent to Hannah supporters is a simple case of the blind leading the blind. If you haven't personally done the research yourself than you will never know the truth. There is absolutely no evidence that this letter or email even exists. The only person who has supposedly seen this letter is Jspringhouse. That should be a eye opener to everyone. This entire "letter" thing is just an attempt to try and find fault in Barry Babb because nobody can find anything dirty on him. Babb truly is a great candidate for Sheriff. He has management experience, he is honest, he is a Man of God(and if that bothers you than Babb probably doesn't want your vote), a family man, and Most importantly he truly cares about Fayette County and bringing it back to the town it was before retired Johnson quit caring, about 8 years before he retired.
My gut instinct is that Jspringhouse is someone in a high position who works for Hannanh at the Sheriff's Dept. and knows that if Hannah is not re-elected he will be not be able to control and have negative influence on the Sheriff's Dept. any longer. I have done my research and I am aware that Jspringhouse is only answering to parts of the accusations of the supposed letter/email. When he answered the question about Hannah and he wife getting raises the past four years. He only stated that Sheriff Hannah hasn't received a raise in the past four years. Forgot to mention that his wife has received pay raises the past 4 years, while most of the Sheriff's department hasn't seen an annualy pay raise in 4 years. And about Captian Hannah's promotion, Johnson promoted her to Captian after her husband, Wayne Hannah, had won the election and before her husband took over office in January. That way it could not be said that he prompted his on wife. This are just a few of the small details that Jspringhouse has left out of his research. I recommend that everyone do there own research, the records are there, and you will see that if you want a respectable man to run our Sheriff's department than Barry Babb is your only option.

The one that stood out to me was the claim of calling the police chiefs. What else would they say to that question if asked over the phone? Nobody in a position such as that would ever risk their livelihood, even if it was a known fact. What is the upside in telling someone who is unknown as friend or foe anything different? Just seems an odd claim to me.
