Congratulations to the Southern Baptist Church!

The Southern Baptist Church, which has the most diverse congregants in the United States, has elected at their conference in New Orleans the first African American president of their organization.
History tells us that before the '60's, this particular denomination was supportive of segregation. The newly elected president ran unopposed and was congratulated for rebuilding his church in New Orleans TWICE! His church was destroyed by Katrina - and he traveled throughout the country giving guidance and solace to his parishners. They came back to New Orleans and rebuilt their church with the help of other churches of this denomination. There has been some talk of changing the name of the religious organization. I hope they don't. The action taken by this church and its members represents the new south - and all should be very proud of what they have accomplished.

SL, Race baiters...
...have a very narrow view, with respect to their history/experience; the Catholic church, in the US, has a HUGELY diverse population and has had so for many, many years. Hispanics, Anglo-Saxons, Vietnamese (and other former SE Asians nationalities), Blacks, and even Canadians! Given their 2,000 year+ history, some of those have a more convoluted history than Southern Baptists, of course! SB's will no doubt catch up with us as time goes on; that's what missionaries are for, I believe!

Can't celebrate any progress? Sad. . . . But very telling. Of the few who have read this sharing, those who have a problem celebrating progress take time to post. MOST churches in Fayette County have reached out to all. The Catholic church and many others marched with Civil Rights activists in the '60's. They didn't have much changing to do. Many others also showed Christian love. Change is difficult. To refuse to celebrate and congratulate change is interesting . Christians throughout the country are celebrating with the Southern Baptist Church. There was a lot of love expressed in the telling of the story of that election.

It's very sad
when people look at everything through the prism of race instead of focusing on the content of character. When that begins to happen, then true change has taken place.

I don't know or care your party affiliation - but you certainly don't represent the majority of Americans in this country with your refusal to celebrate the progress in race relations in Fayette County or our country. It would be unfair to say that some Republicans have used the racisim that still exists to benefit their policy - but gosh, it appears that you , Lindsey, and Joe Kawfi insist on denying that any progress has occurred. I celebrate daily with my neighbors who are Republican Christians this progress. We may have different ideologies on other issues - but certainly not the change that has happened in Fayette County since the '60's.
I had been carefully taught not to trust southern white Americans. I'm pleased to say that my experience proves that not all southern white people represent what I had been taught in the 50's and 60's. CHANGE HAS BEEN BENEFICIAL IN RACE RELATIONS IN THE US - and fewer people are listening to your attempt to continue the ignorance that your posts represent.

You don't fool anyone
You only 'celebrate' when black people are involved. You view everything through the prism of race instead of focusing on what truly matter like character and ideas. Your racism is so transparent. sad.
Would you be celebrating if a white person was elected to head the NAACP? (Not that it would ever happen since that oranization is racist as well).
in our congregation for years 12 to be exact.
So I guess the South has been "changing" a lot longer then you give it credit.
