Master gardeners
February provided opportunities for Fayette Master Gardeners to volunteer and to learn about Camillas. During the Southeastern Flower Show at Cobb Galleria Centre, February 4 - 6, twelve interns and members volunteered in different jobs.
The show was presented by the Southeastern Horticultural Society which chose the theme “Discover the Beauty of Green.” It was an outstanding show with great speakers. Those volunteering received hours and a pin.
The volunteers were: Linda Ellis, George Long, Barbara Heatwole, JoAnn Wright, Geri Smith, Judy Hughes, Lynda Fields, Sheila Ostrofsky, Sue Nelson, Cindy Martin, Valerie Morris, and John Merrick.
At the regular meeting of the Fayette Master Gardener Association at Fayette County Public Library the members were warmly greeted by members of the Hospitality Committee who had scatttered around the room lovely arrangements of Winter greens. Beverages and very southern home baked treats were offered on the refreshment table.
John Newsome of Atlanta gave a comprehensive program on Camillas. He encouraged the attendees to visit Massey Lane Camilla Gardens in Fort Valley, Georgia. Newsome won the Trophy for Best of Show in Camilla Class plus several blue ribbons at the recent Southeastern Flower Show. He is Vice President of the American Camilla Society Atlanta Coast Region. Also, he is President of the NGA Camilla Society and often judges Camilla shows. His interest began in the shrub 35 years ago. His talk and slides were well received since the Camilla shrub is one of the best loved in Georgia.
