High school sports briefs - March 28


TENNIS: Fell 4-1 and 4-1 to ELCA. Skylar Mortensen had the lone girls’ win, and Michaels Edwards picked up the only boys’ win.



BASEBALL: Beat Forest Park 20-2 in five innings. The Chiefs scored seven runs in the first, seven in the second and six in the fourth.

LACROSSE: Won 16-9 over Lovett (girls) to remain undefeated. Shelby Durden led with five goals, followed by Tulah Blanton and Abby Ott with three apiece and Maddie Prescott with two.



TENNIS: Lost a pair of matches this week to ELCA and AIS.



High school sports briefs - March 27



LACROSSE: Downed East Coweta 13-10 behind four goals from Craig Ward, three from Billy Magill, and two each by Sam Herman and Patrick Anderson. Barrett Bornhofen added a goal. Chris Costello and Jim O’Meill led the defense. The girls continued their winning streak with a 17-2 victory over Grady. Caitlin O’Brien scored five goals and Becca Beato added three. Local college students race across Europe

Three college students from Fayette County were selected for a global competition where 100 teams will be competing "Amazing Race"-style for seven days beginning April 4.

The team members are Corrigan Nolan and Ryan Nolan, both seniors at Georgia Tech, along with Keeley Christensen, a junior at Georgia State.

The race will begin in London and stretch approximately 1,000 kilometers across at least checkpoints to its end in Berlin. Throughout the journey the team can only barter in Red Bull exclusively. Read More»

BASEBALL: Lost to Lovejoy 8-4, as Chris Jones was 2-for-3 with a home run and Kameron Barlow was 2-for-3. In a 15-6 win over Sandy Creek, Alex Adorno went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI. Jones, Damon Haskett and Micah Sander had two hits each. Austin “Bobo” Spruill picked up the win.

SOCCER: Lost 8-0 to LaGrange (girls).



SOCCER: Won 6-3 over ELCA (boys) as Joey Blount started the scoring for the War Eagles and Spencer Geerlings finished it.

FAYETTE COUNTY (baseball) lost 6-1 to Lovejoy Thursday. Only one of the Lovejoy runs was earned, according to coach Frank Dixon, who said, “Every team has days when things do not click and this was ours.” Chris Jones and Jordan Coleman had the only two hits for the Tigers.

McINTOSH (girls lacrosse) won big Thursday over Columbus 19-2. Shelby Durden had a percent shooting percentage with 7 goals and 4 assists. Caitlin O'Brien had 5 goals and 1 assist. WHITEWATER (baseball) defeated Union Grove Union Grove 7-2 Tuesday night. Ethan Gillis and John Hendershot combined to stifle the opposition on the mound, and the Wildcat bats came to life in the third. Nick Fuerstenau got the inning going with a solo home run, and the rest of the Wildcat hitters joined in with multiple hits.

FAYETTE COUNTY (baseball) defeated Greenville Tuesday night behind Jordan Coleman’s complete-game no-hitter. Chris Jones was 2-for-2 with a homer and 5 RBI, and Wahid Ali also homered.

STARR’S MILL (girls lacrosse) beat Columbus 19-4 Tuesday. Leading goal scorers were Meghan Mills and Katie Buck, and Madeline Scheinost was solid in goal.

SANDY CREEK (boys soccer) lost 5-2 to Carrollton Tuesday in what coach Hunter Seegers said was the best game his team has played yet.

STARR’S MILL (track) competed at the Mill Creek meet Saturday. Madeline Hammond was second in the high jump; Alexis Farley was fourth in the long jump and second in the triple jump; Taylor Brunskole was fourth in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles; Annika Strauss was fourth in the pole vault; Jolene Berthold was fifth in the pole vault; James Adams was sixth in the 1600 meters; and Hailey Gollnick was sixth in the 3200 meters. Williams' hoops career progressing at PCC

A former Fayette County basketball standout is making his mark at the college level in 2014.

Corey Williams is a freshman at Pensacola Christian College and has become a bigger presence on the floor as the season has progressed. He has appeared in 24 games so far, averaging just over 11 minutes and three points per game. Read More»
