5 local teams in soccer state semis

Soccer fans at three Fayette schools have gotten chance this year to cheer their squads in the GHSA state semifinals in two classifications, and one bracket still has a chance to see an all-Fayette final.

The top three girls teams from Region 4-AAAAA (Starr’s Mill, Northgate and McIntosh) have earned semifinal spots, and they take the field this week to see who will play this weekend for the state championship. Read More»

Old Fayette rivals to meet on football field again in August

The county’s two oldest high schools will square off on the gridiron the first weekend of the 2014 season, and seven other games during the fall will feature two local teams facing each other. Read More»

All-Region soccer teams are announced

Eight of the 16 players on the Region 4-AAAAA girls soccer All-Region team for this season are from two Fayette schools.

Five players from Starr’s Mill made the team: Paige Betsill, Molly Moroney, Dylan Patterson, Carly Pressgrove and Lauren Yoss.

They were joined by three members of the McIntosh squad: Amy Brewer, Taylor Dowse and Cecily Hartman.

Northgate also had three players: Lily Barron, Ashley Keller and Hayli Verbanic. Two each from Ola and Union Grove, along with one player from Forest Park, rounded out the list. Read More»

BASEBALL: Whitewater and Starr’s Mill will be back in action on the diamond this afternoon in separate brackets of the AAAAA state baseball tournament after taking care of business over the weekend.

The Wildcats, the top seed out of Region 4-AAAAA, hosted Lakeside-Evans Friday and swept a doubleheader, winning 8-3 and 6-0. They will be back at home for the second round with a best-of-three series against Hardaway-Effingham County, starting today with a doubleheader and a third game tomorrow if necessary.

Three local athletes won state championships over the weekend in the Georgia High School Association girls track and field meet in Albany.

Chinyere Njoku took first place in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles to lead the Fayette County Lady Tigers to a fourth-place team finish in AAAA.

Leah Banks of Our Lady of Mercy won the long jump as the Lady Bobcats came in fifth in A, while Noelle Parker won the AAAAA state title in the shot put for the Whitewater Lady Wildcats. Read More»

Johnson honored by Touchdown Club

Andrew Johnson of McIntosh is among more than 20 student-athletes being honored this weekend by the Touchdown Club of Atlanta-National Football Foundation Chapter for football and scholastic achievements.

The special recognition is to take place Sunday at the annual TCA-NFF Scholarship banquet at the CNN Omni Center.

Each student receives a plaque and scholarship that can be used the school of his or her choice. More than $30,000 in scholarships will be awarded. Read More»

BASEBALL: Defeated Our Lady of Mercy twice this week, 13-3 and 19-0.

GOLF: The boys and girls swept the Class A Private Area 3 Championships this week. The boys shot a 319 and were led by freshman Jake Milanowski of Peachtree City, the Low Medalist winner with a 75. The girls shot a 181 and were led by junior Jordan Daniel of Newnan, also the low medalist with a 74. Both teams automatically qualify for state which will be May 19 in Augusta. Read More»
