Donald Payne, a Fayetteville resident and graduate of Landmark Christian School, has been named the Pioneer Football League’s Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore defensive back for Stetson University.

He received the honor by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Payne garnered the top defensive award just one year after being named the league’s Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, making him the first to accomplish that feat since freshman honors were created in 2006. Read More»

Brielle Grubbs is on her way to fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing college softball, having signed with the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.

An accomplished outfielder both offensively and defensively, she was nominated to the Softball Hot 100 Watch List (2013), named to the All County and All Region teams (2012 and 2013), received the Whitewater High School (WHS) Freshman of the Year Award (2011) and the Stephanie Phillips Leadership Award (2011) as a freshman starting outfielder for a Whitewater team that finished as state runnerup. Seventh year making it to quarterfinals

The current senior class at Sandy Creek High School was in elementary school the last time its football team lost in the first two rounds of the state playoffs, and that legacy continues.

The Patriots are in the quarterfinals for the seventh straight year after a rare second-round road game, winning 29-7 over Region 3-AAAA champion Wayne County in Jesup. The team will hit the road again Friday to face Cartersville, the top team from Region 7-AAAA. Read More»

‘Gift of Lights’ returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway

The Gift of Lights holiday light spectacular, one of the largest and most affordable holiday light exhibits in Metro Atlanta, is underway at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) through Saturday, Jan. 3.

It features a two-mile drive-through course with more than two million LED lights, numerous light displays and a plethora of special promotional nights.

This year’s route takes visitors into the Atlanta Motor Speedway infield and onto a portion of the 1.54-mile oval racing surface.
