The quality of life slippery slope: Pursuit of happiness trumps all else

The Quality of Life slippery slope was fast-tracked on Jan. 22, 1973, when a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court “enlightened” justices “found” a “right” of abortion (euphemism for legalized murder) in the U.S. Constitution. This ruling legally denied one group of human beings their personhood and right to life and, legally justified to another group of human beings that all human beings are not persons and are not worthy of human life. How did this happen and where is it leading us? Read More»

City: More info about PTC ‘waste’

The Jan. 9, 2013, issue of The Citizen contained a letter to the editor from Mr. Josh Bloom, who was concerned about what he perceived to be government waste exemplified by a construction roll-off dumpster full of what he described as “office furniture, presumably from the recreation building, ... (with) absolutely nothing wrong with any of it.”

Mr. Bloom suggested several options for getting rid of these items that were preferable to disposal, including redistribution to other city departments, sale of the items, or donation of the items to charities for sale or use. Read More»

Mayor slams Council

[Editor’s note: The following is a statement read by the mayor to the City Council Jan. 10. He provided a copy to news media.]

When the Council members voted to settle the legal actions against them they said they didn’t want to cost the taxpayers any more money even though they could have won. That is a false claim. They could not have won. To date, I have said nothing, waiting for the legal costs to be reported. Tonight, costs are in the packet and it is my turn to make a statement. Read More»

2nd Amendment gun love must have limits

We love our guns. Like any love affair our passion for our weapons transcends logic and certainly evades explanation. And like any true love, what feels good is not always good, and our titillation hides the cause of the damage, if not the damage itself.

So it didn’t surprise me to read the passion of a man who should know better, explain away the damage wrought by a passion turned obsession. Read More»

Lay off Westmoreland on gun position; try attacking nation’s real issue

In response to Irene Cheyne’s letter chastising my congressman, Rep. Westmoreland, for accepting a contribution from the NRA in 2012, so what?

You feign concern that he has not published a self-deprecating press release on the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. Is there more than one publicly acceptable response to the senseless killing of innocent children? Read More»

Dienhart: Budget will be high priority in ’13

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy New Year. I’d also like to quickly outline my vision of what city government should be focusing on over the next year. This will also be the template I hope to put forward to reverse the stagnation and lack of economic development that has mainly been caused by the city’s leadership vacuum. Read More»

Government waste on display in Peachtree City — See for yourself

Discarded city-owned office furniture. Photo/Josh Bloom.

I was on my way to the Peachtree City Dog Park (behind the BMX Track) when I passed the recreation building (now being remodeled for a senior center) with a dumpster in front of it. What was in the dumpster was surprising.

This dumpster was loaded FULL of office furniture, presumably from the recreation building. From the looks of all the pieces, there was absolutely nothing wrong with any of it. Read More»

U.S. debt paid in full — in 2079

The debt: This is not a party problem, this is a national problem. It is most likely more complicated, but the simple arithmetic is this:

The most recent surpluses were 1960, 1969, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001.

Our best surplus year (which was under Clinton) was the year 2000: $236 billion.

If we were to get to a surplus of $236 billion [in 2013], and then had a surplus of $236 billion from here on out, and apply those surpluses to the debt, it would take 67 years to bring the debt to zero.

That is the year 2079. Read More»

Rep. Westmoreland, speak up about guns

Lynn Westmoreland is my Congressional representative. He may be yours as well.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Rep. Westmoreland accepted a significant financial contribution from the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the 2012 cycle.

However, he has yet to release a statement about the assault-weapon massacre of children in Newtown, Conn.

Come on, Rep. Westmoreland, you’re a family man. What do you have to say?

Signs of straw men and logical fallacies

“... sign, sign, everywhere a sign.” So went Les Emmerson’s song, performed by Five Man Electrical Band in 1970.

Argument by analogy is valid only if the underlying analogy is valid. Otherwise, the argument frequently becomes a “straw man,” an overstuffed dummy erected to draw attention from the real issue. Read More»
