Fayette resident shot after dispute at Fulton County club

A Fayette County man was shot in the parking lot of a north Fayette County school early Thursday morning after being involved in an altercation at a club on Old National Highway.

Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb said the victim was shot in the arm at 3 a.m. Thursday by an unknown assailant who followed him into the county.

Babb said the events that led to the shooting began at a club on Old National Highway in Fulton County. A dispute began over what was believed to have been a wager related to a game of pool. Babb said the dispute was carried outside the club. Read More»

Senoia family featured on ‘Family Feud’

A Senoia family will try to prove they have the right stuff as they try to take down a family from Michigan on the “Family Feud” television game show that will be aired April 22.

The Pope family from Senoia will face off against the Parker Family from Lansing, Mich., in front of a live studio audience in Atlanta with the chance to win up to $100,000 and a brand new car, along with some serious bragging rights, said Family Feud spokesperson Megan Barker. Nissan dealership planned for Newnan

Case of county attorney’s wiped hard drive is sent to prosecutor

Fayette County State Court Solicitor Jamie Inagawa is being asked to determine whether former county attorney Scott Bennett violated Georgia open records laws by having all the data wiped off his office and laptop computers, both of which are owned by the county, just as he was ending his employment contract with the county late last year.

Violations of the state’s open records laws are classified as misdemeanors, which is why the matter is being sent to Inagawa, who handles misdemeanor cases in Fayette County State Court. Read More»

Band parents tune up on BoE plans for cuts

Music education in the lower grades is popular with many parents, the Fayette County Board of Education was reminded Monday night.

Eliminating fifth-grade band or orchestra and repurposing assistant band directors at the county’s five high schools was on the meeting agenda, and band parents showed up in strength — even a band director from neighboring Coweta County. Read More»

4 commissioners disavow East F’ville Bypass

Last week, several Fayette County commissioners made it clear they are not moving forward with the proposed East Fayetteville Bypass.

Those voices against the project were missing the week before, when county staff made a presentation on the project during the county’s retreat April 5. The presentation noted that the project would exhaust the remaining $28 million in funds left from the county’s transportation sales tax and require another $5.8 million to complete. Read More»

Medical office/retail development proposed for Poplar Road near I-85

A 113,300 square-foot medical office and retail development is being proposed on 15.13 acres on the northwest corner of Poplar Road and Newnan Crossing Bypass East near Interstate 85.
