McIntosh, Whitewater top Fayette graduation rates

The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) announced last week that statewide high school graduation rates have risen to an all-time high of nearly 81 percent. While great for Georgia, the Fayette County School System for the same period showed a metro Atlanta-topping graduation rate of 94 percent.

Jobless rate dips in PTC to 7.4%; Fayette at 8% as hiring increases

Recession or not, unemployment rates released late last week by the Georgia Dept. of Labor show jobless figures falling to 8 percent in Fayette County and to 7.4 percent in Peachtree City.

The September jobless rate in Fayette dipped to 8 percent, half a percentage point better than the 8.5 percent rate in August. The rate in September 2009 was also 8.5 percent.

Fayette’s unemployment figures for September reflect 4,036 people out of work in a workforce of 50,319. Read More»

Thieves make off with business AC units

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of several large air conditioning units stolen in the past few weeks from businesses along Ga. Highway 85 North.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Brent Rowan said several air conditioning units were stolen on Sept. 30, Oct. 13 and Oct. 26 from businesses on Carnegie Place and on Ellis Road. The Ellis Road thefts occurred at the same business.

Seniors hear “the other side” of the Medicare story

More than 100 people showed up Oct. 28 at Peachtree City Hall to learn more about the transformation of the American healthcare system and its potential impact on Medicare recipients.

Sharpsburg man struck by vehicle, dies

A Sharpsburg man died early Monday night after being struck by a vehicle traveling on Ga. Highway 154 at Malvern Hill near Willis Road. No charges have been filed at this time.

Coweta Sheriff’s Lt. John LaChance said Sharpsburg resident Shane McCreery, 33, was hit by a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Whitesburg resident James Green at approximately 7:34 p.m. Monday. Read More»

Feds: Fayette drug agents helped take down Mexican cell

The Tactical Narcotics Team of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was lauded this week for participating in an investigation that led to disruption of a Mexican drug trafficking organization that operated in nearby Ellenwood.

In three separate incidents involving the cell, agents seized over 900 pounds of marijuana and $1.8 million in cash, officials said. Read More»

The Wildcat Marching Band had an outstanding performance last Saturday, Oct. 30 at the "LaFayette Marching Classic" at Fayette County High School. In Prelims the band placed 1st in the Class 4A division, receiving all superior ratings for band, percussion, and color guard. The color guard and percussion also placed placed 1st in Class. Girl, 16, life-flighted after PTC cart crash

REVISED FOR PRINT Nov. 2 — A woman lost control of a golf cart carrying four children and a teenager off Kedron Drive in north Peachtree City Friday night and careened into a tree. The single cart wreck resulted in the teenager being life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center. The other four passengers, ranging in age from 1 to 7, and the 24-year-old driver were treated and released at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. Read More»
