Residents urged to prepare for severe weather

Weather sirens to be tested Wednesday for statewide drill

As Severe Weather Awareness Week convenes next week, the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services is reminding local residents how they can be prepared for weather-related emergencies.

The county maintains a system of 23 severe weather warning sirens located in some of the most vulnerable and densely populated areas. The sirens are sounded during tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings and also during a tornado watch. Read More»

Arson confirmed in two-home Palmetto fire

A Jan. 18 fire involving two homes on Carlton Pointe Drive in Palmetto is under investigation after it was determined that the blaze was intentionally set. Both homes were unoccupied at the time.

Palmetto Fire Chief Henry Argo said the fire call came in at 4:50 p.m., with the first units responding four minutes later. Firefighters arriving at the scene found the homes at 667 and 669 Carlton Pointe Drive on fire.

“We found two homes well involved with fire impinging on the home at 671 Carlton Point Drive,” Argo said. Read More»

Coweta commissioners look at transportation projects

An overview of upcoming transportation projects presented to Coweta County commissioners last week showed what should be a host of activity spanning the next three years. Some of the projects will be funded by 1-cent Special Purpose Location Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars, with others funded by the county’s general fund budget and still others by the Georgia Dept. of Transportation (GDOT).

A sampling of the SPLOST road construction projects for 2010 include Lower Fayetteville Road at Ga. Highway 15 at a cost of $2.1 million and Hal Jones Road at U.S. Highway 29 for $1.96 million. Read More»

Commission delays decision on homeless facility

A lengthy discussion before Coweta County commissioners Jan. 19 led to a postponement of the decision on the fate of the Belair Estates transitional home in north Coweta. Commissioners will take up the issue next month. Read More»

Senoia DDA outlines projects

A short presentation by the Senoia Downtown Development Authority at the Jan. 18 City Council meeting revealed a wealth of information of DDA’s current activities and future plans. Among those were plans for a monthly farmer’s market, the new DDA website and a cultural arts reception tonight at the Stone Lodge.

DDA representative Wendy Maguire announced the group’s plan to initiate a farmer’s market for area growers to be held on the second Saturday of each month beginning in June. Maguire said the location of the farmer’s market is still being determined. Read More»

Senoia drops rental rate on Stone Lodge

It is a beautiful building whose name says it all. The city-owned Stone Lodge at Marimac Lake in Senoia makes a unique location for all types of special events. But the rental rate was deemed too costly and led to a rate reduction at the Jan. 18 City Council meeting.

City administrator Richard Ferry led the rental rate discussion on both the Stone Lodge off Pylant Street and the Freeman Sasser Building at Seavy Street Park. Read More»

F’ville’s Hollingsworth House faces foreclosure

Craig and Belinda Fitch have come to the end of being able to operate their special events business out of the Hollingsworth House in Fayetteville. The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) said it is likely not in the position to purchase the property due to earlier commitments to have the old Travis Hardware building renovated for a potential restaurant. ‘Making the Dream Count’ theme of 10th F’ville MLK fest

The annual event celebrating the birth and life of Martin Luther King, Jr., began with a parade under cool, clear skies in Fayetteville Monday morning. The celebration sponsored by the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP continued at noon at Sams Auditorium and featured Morehouse College junior Justin L. Bryant.

The sixth annual parade began the day’s celebration, carrying the theme “Making the Dream Count.” The parade featured 40 entries with representation from bands and ROTC units from around metro Atlanta. Read More»

Whitewater teachers plead guilty in sex-for-hire sting

The former chorus director and the band director at Whitewater High School pled guilty last week in DeKalb County to pandering after they arranged a meeting at a hotel there with two prostitutes who were actually undercover police officers.

Douglas Dee, the former band director and Kelly Butler, the former choral director, were fined $1,000 each and sentenced to 12 months probation. Read More»
