Space heater led to trailer fire

A space heater is being blamed for causing a fire that destroyed a trailer in downtown Tyrone last week.

The trailer, located adjacent to Tyrone Tire, caught fire Jan. 21 but no one was hurt, fire officials said. The resident had left the space heater on for several dogs while the resident was away, officials said.

The fire was well underway when the first crew arrived on the scene. The crew’s response was delayed initially because the wrong address was given by the person reporting the fire, officials said. Read More»

Dec. unemployment in Coweta at 10.8 percent

New figures released Thursday by the Georgia Dept. of Labor (DOL) show Coweta County’s unemployment rate up more than a percentage point in the past month. November’s 9.7 percent unemployment rate rose significantly to a rate of 10.8 percent in December.

The new December rate of 10.8 percent represents 6,337 people unemployment in a workforce of 58,741. Read More»

A request by All Souls Church to construct an 8,400 square-foot building on Buddy West Road was denied by Coweta County commissioners last week on a 3-2 vote. Cop quits after sex inquiry in F’ville

Long-time Fayetteville Police Lt. David Webb has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing that stemmed from a September allegation of the sexual assault of a woman alleged to have occurred a year earlier at her place of employment in Fayetteville.

A Fayette man who was robbed at gunpoint off Layden Avenue and Kenwood Road Jan. 24, 2009 testified in court Monday that when the gunman pointed a pistol at his head, “I was afraid for my life.”

Thousands lose power during Tinsley Mill flooding rescue

It was another episode of homes being evacuated due to flooding for some Tinsley Mill residents Sunday night. Some residents of the 10 Peachtree City homes returned to their residences Sunday night.

The low-lying Tinsley Mill subdivision off Flat Creek Road near Ga. Highway 54 is no stranger to flooding from heavy rains. And approximately 2.5 inches of rain did the trick Sunday when residents of the 10 homes were evacuated beginning around 6:30 p.m., according to Peachtree City spokesperson Betsy Tyler. Read More»

Fireplace ashes blamed for mobile home fire

Ashes from a fireplace ignited a fire that destroyed a home in the Four Seasons mobile home community Monday afternoon, officials said.

A woman and child managed to escape their home on Dolphin Drive after a neighbor spotted the flames and alerted them, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The ashes were left on the porch of the residence and may have been re-ignited in part due to wind in the area, Nelms said. Read More»
