Valleywood Road issue still unresolved

The longstanding question about the closure of the railroad crossing at Valleywood Road in Tyrone continued Thursday night. Representatives from Georgia Dept. of Transportation (GDOT) were on hand to review the project again and solicit community input. Residents were there, at least most of them, to voice their opposition to the closure. The Town Council is expected to make a final decision on the matter in the next 30-60 days. Read More»

PTC briefs: bridge, tunnel project updates

Due to rainy and cold weather the completion date has been adjusted for construction of the path connections leading to the bridge over the CSX railroad tracks along Ga. Highway 54.

The deadline, which was supposed to be Feb. 2, has been extended to March 16 though the contractor thinks it can be finished earlier, city officials said this week.

The bridge and the tunnels to which it will connect have been complete for more than three years but they have been unusable because of the delay in getting the path connections. Read More»

Fischer Crossings still in limbo

There is still no resolution to the Fischer Crossings commercial development along Ga. Highway 54 just east of Fischer Road. Coweta County commissioners Feb. 2 voted 2-2 on changes to the conceptual site plan pertaining to an aquatic center on the north side of the property and questions about the access road situated behind the aquatic center and the theaters. Friday is usually the favorite day of the week for most people, and for three teachers, it was a day that they will not soon forget.

The Teacher of the Year prize patrol made surprise classroom visits on Jan. 29 congratulating the three finalists selected to vie for the 2010 Fayette County Teacher of the Year title. It will have been nearly 10 years to the day from the time that Barnes & Noble opened its doors across from the Fayette Pavilion until the time it closes those doors. The bookseller will discontinue operations at its Fayetteville store on Ga. Highway 85 at the end of May. Read More»

Law dog bites crime, gets barefoot burglar

Fayette sheriff’s detectives have arrested five Clayton County youths for burglarizing a home in the Hampstead Heath subdivision off Ga. Highway 314 North early Monday afternoon.

A witness alerted 911 to suspicious activity in the area and the first responding deputy was able to arrest one of the suspects in a turquoise Camaro at the subdivision’s entrance off Hwy. 314, said sheriff’s Det. Brian Lee. Another suspect fled the car on foot — barefoot — into the woods, Lee said. Read More»

$25,000 reward in postal robbery

The United States Postal Service is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of two men who robbed a postal service contract truck driver at the Fayetteville Post Office Friday night.

U.S. Postal Inspectors are asking anyone who was at the post office between 6:30 and 7:30 to contact them at 1-877-876-2455. Witnesses may have unwittingly noticed something that could help with the case, said spokesperson Yulanda Burns.

“If they saw any suspicious activity, we really want them to call us,” Burns said. Read More»
