Senoia gets its charter school

It was the final hurdle for parents who wanted a charter school in Senoia. That hurdle came Thursday when the Georgia State School Board offered no opposition to the recommendation by the board’s Charter Schools Committee that the petition to start up the Coweta Charter Academy at Senoia be approved.

The decision came on the heels of a December approval by the Georgia Charter Schools Commission that paved the way for Florida-based Charter Schools USA to open a K-8 charter school in Senoia. Read More»

Thomas Crossroads girls raise money for Haiti victims

Red Cross volunteer Tracey Crane receives a check for $1,400 for Haiti’s earthquake victims from Thomas Crossroads Elementary School 4th graders Riley Scruggs and Taylor Racht. The two girls initiated the “Pennies for the Poor” project at the school and raised the funds over a 10-day period.

It is always relevant for a person to think of the plight of others and go into action to lend a hand. Such an action is no less significant when it is born in the minds and hearts of two 4th graders. And that is what happened as Thomas Crossroads Elementary School students Taylor Racht and Riley Scruggs began the “Pennies for the Poor” effort that raised $1,400 for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Fischer Crossings on agenda again Feb. 16

Developer Scott Seymour will return to the Coweta County Commission next week to see the outcome of a proposed change to the Fischer Crossings commercial development on the northeast corner of Fischer Road and Ga. Highway 34/54. Commissioners on Feb. 2 were split 2-2 on the issue.

The discussion Feb. 2 involved changes to the conceptual site plan pertaining to the addition of a 10,500 square-foot aquatic center on the north side of the property and questions about the access road situated behind the aquatic center and the NCG theaters located on the east side of the property. Rain delays Senoia PD/Muni Court building completion

The completion of the new $1.3 million Senoia police department and municipal court building across from the ball fields on Howard Road is being delayed a bit. It is not a matter of budget overruns or contractor delays. The culprit is the rainy weather that has plagued the area for months. At this point the facility is expected to open sometime in May. F’ville post office installs safety fixes after robbery

Postal inspectors are continuing to investigate the Jan. 29 robbery of a postal truck driver at the Fayetteville Post Office.

Meanwhile, postal officials have corrected several “areas of vulnerability” that were revealed by a risk assessment in the wake of the robbery, said Postal Inspector Yulanda Burns.

“Any vulnerable areas that we did find were corrected for the safety of our postal employees and the safety of our customers,” Burns said. Read More»

3 F’ville IHOP parking lot robbers caught quickly

Armed robbers in the IHOP restaurant parking lot in Fayetteville Sunday night did not make it out of town before being nabbed by police. Two men and a woman were arrested after their vehicle was spotted by an officer on the way to the scene.

Twenty-six-year-old Dandre N. Pottninger of Hampton, 26-year-old Zakee S. Tolbert of Riverdale and 21-year-old Debrona Zyethia Freeman of Lithonia were all charged with robbery, possession of a handgun during the commission of a felony and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, according to Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw. Promise Place gets plug from state

The Promise Place domestic violence refuge program that helps abused woman and their children now has another way of getting the word out to victims who need help.

A public/private partnership is paying for two billboards with organization information in Spalding County. The organization has no outdoor advertising in Fayette County, but it has plenty of people to serve. Promise Place served 900 victims of domestic violence last year in Fayette County. Read More»
