Car defect blamed for boy’s death

A defect in a 1999 Chrysler Sebring is being blamed for the death last week of a 6-year-old boy in north Fayette County.

The vehicle had a defective ignition park interlock that caused it to slip out of park, roll down a driveway and strike the victim, said Capt. Brian Eubanks of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

A few donations needed to complete counseling center

It has been a long time coming and it’s nearly complete. And through it all Square Foot Ministry has kept the faith. About the only thing needed to finish the Fayette Counseling Center in Fayetteville are donations to pay for asphalt on the Bradley Avenue parking lot and funds to cover some outstanding bills for interior materials.

“We’re close to wrapping it up,” said Square Foot’s Craig Wiley.
And what started over a year ago is very close to completion. Wiley said donations to cover the asphalt and some of the interior materials will effectively meet the financial needs of the job. Read More»

Forshee to take job in Athens

It has been nearly four years since Matt Forshee moved to Fayette County to lead its economic development efforts. Forshee will continue to serve as CEO of the Development Authority until March 31 when he will become president of the Athens Economic Development Foundation.

Forshee came to Fayette County in the early summer of 2006 from Oconee County where he began work as a land planner and was later given responsibility for Oconee’s economic development efforts. Read More»

Return of value deadline nears

Fayette County property owners wishing to file a “return of value” have until April 1 to get it done. The filing is open to property owners who disagree with the value placed on their properties last year.

Tax Assessor Joel Benton said tax assessment notices coming in May will only be sent if the fair market value property has changed since last year. Benton said assessment notices are expected to be mailed May 3, adding that those notices will be sent only if the property is determined to have increased in value or unless new legislation requires it. Sex offender arrested for failure to register

Fayetteville resident Jesse Alan Murden was arrested over the weekend by Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies for failure to register as a sex offender.

Murden was released from Ware State Prison on Sept. 19 after serving a 10-year sentence for child molestation and aggravated child molestation stemming from a 1999 Rockdale County case.

Fayette County Sheriff’s arrest records showed Murden with an address on Ga. Highway 314 in Fayetteville. He was booked into Fayette County Jail.

Environmentalists, educators gear up for Earth Day

The annual celebration of Earth Day in Fayette County is around the corner. This year’s event will be held in Tyrone April 17 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Shamrock Park on Senoia Road.

The widely-attended annual event will include educational exhibits and presentations, a green market with eco-friendly products and services, entertainment and special awards for schools and organizations. Read More»
