West PTC: get ready for some smoke

The contractor clearing the land for Lake McIntosh is preparing to begin burning debris, and Peachtree City officials are worried at least part of the city will be choked out by the smoke.

Peachtree City Fire Chief Ed Eiswerth said the event will be “a big burn” and stands to at least startle some residents to the point where they might flood the county’s 911 center with calls. Read More»

Police: PTC church burglar caught

A 24-year-old Peachtree City man has been arrested for burglarizing two churches here, taking electronics, cash, computers and musical instruments, police said Thursday afternoon.

Authorities also linked Joseph Michael Robinson to two similar incidents in unincorporated Fayette and Coweta counties, police said.

A substantial amount of electronics and money was found in Robinson’s residence at 203 Morgans Turn, and some of the items appear to be related to a fifth church burglary, at a location in North Georgia, police said. Read More»

Gun and knife show being considered for Kedron Fieldhouse

The City’s Recreation Department and Leisure Services Commission is considering the possibility of renting the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center Complex for a weekend gun and knife show early next year. This would include the fieldhouse, pools, rink and all parking. Read More»

Santa Run starts this weekend

A visit from jolly old St. Nicholas on Christmas Eve is heralded by sleigh bells, but Santa will be making the rounds early in Peachtree City to a chorus of sirens, courtesy of the Peachtree City Fire Department and Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Each year, the firefighters stand in for Santa’s elves to escort Mr. Kringle through Peachtree City neighborhoods, collecting canned goods for local needy families (and helping Santa double check that naughty and nice list). Read More»

Piedmont Newnan asks if name should change

Work at the eight-story Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Poplar Road near I-85 continues. Expected to open in early 2012, CEO Michael Bass is asking for community input on whether the replacement hospital should retain the same name or be given a new one. A survey on that question can be found through Dec. 8 at www.piedmontnewnan.org

Those traveling along Poplar Road at I-85 cannot miss the eight-story Piedmont Newnan Hospital now under construction and expected to open in early 2012. But should the new replacement hospital carry that name or should the name be changed? That is what hospital CEO Michael Bass wants to know and he is asking the community for input. Read More»

Christmas comes to Senoia, Newnan this weekend

It’s that time of year. The Christmas season is here and so are the parades and festivities this weekend in Senoia and Newnan. Light Up Senoia festivities will be held Saturday, followed by Newnan’s annual Christmas parade on Sunday. Weather for both events should include relatively clear skies and cool temperatures.

Senoia soldier slain in Afghanistan

Nineteen year-old Senoia resident Pvt. Austin Staggs was one of five soldiers killed in Afghanistan Monday when a border policeman opened fire on his unit.

Pvt. Staggs and five others died Nov. 29 in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an insurgent attacked their unit with small arms fire, according to the U.S. Dept. of Defense. Read More»
