Flooded bridge in south Coweta

The Coweta County Road Department at 3:45 p.m. Wednseday announced that HInes Road in the southeast portion of the county has been barricaded due to creek waters over the bridge. Hines Road connects Cecil Hunter Road and Hwy. 54. The Road Department will continue to monitor the situation. Drivers should avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Whitewater's HOSA going to national competition

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at Whitewater High are advancing to the national competition after earning top four placements in the region Competitive Events Program.

A total of 26 students are heading to nationals in Orlando, Florida this June. New state unemployment data released today shows that the jobless ranks have increased yet again in Fayette and Coweta counties.

DECA students head to nationals

Over half of Whitewater High’s DECA Club members who advanced to the state competition earned top placements, qualifying them for the national tournament in Louisville, Kentucky next month.

Students who earn top 6 placements are advanced to the national competition. March 6 was opening day of the spring season for Fayette County Youth Soccer and for some of these players, members of U6 Muppet soccer teams, it marked their athletic debut. Arrests in separate kidnapping, molestation cases

An investigation that began in October concerning two women who kidnapped and robbed an elderly north Fayette woman after claiming to be police officers has resulted in one arrest. In another case, an Ashburn man has been charged with aggravated child molestation.

Paula Aurelia Youngblood, 55, of Birmingham, Ala., has been charged with impersonating an officer, kidnapping and robbery, according to Fayette County Sheriffs Office spokesperson Brent Rowan. Read More»

Citizens Police Academy starts Apr. 1 in Fayetteville

The Fayetteville Police Department is set to begin another round of its Citizens Police Academy, now in its fourth year. The academy is an effort to increase community involvement with the department and offer insight into the services it provides.

Fayetteville Police spokesperson Capt. Steve Crawshaw said the purpose of the academy is to foster better communication between citizens and police through a variety of sessions that help citizens to better understand the workings and responsibilities of the department. Read More»

So far so good for 1-cent tax for schools

The recession is causing plenty of problems with things like job creation, but it is being relatively kind to revenues for the Fayette County School System’s 1-cent sales tax. The school system has taken in nearly $15 million in fewer than 10 months of collections.

One-cent sales tax receipts through February have generated $14.565 million and are averaging $1.513 million per month for the nine full months since collections began. At that rate, the six-year collection period would generate more than $108 million of the $115 million ceiling. Read More»
