Coweta BoE adopts tentative FY 2012 budget

The Coweta County School System’s budget for the FY 2011-2012 school year that begins July 1 was tentatively set May 23. Board of Education members are expected to approve the $165.5 million General Fund budget on June 14. That figure represents a decrease of $200,000 over the current budget and a drop of $6.7 million from FY 2009-2010. Coweta Charter Academy searches for way to stay open

The May 16 ruling by the Georgia Supreme Court that effectively put many charter schools out of business continues to impact the Coweta County residents whose children attend or were planning to attend the Coweta Charter Academy at Senoia. Charters Schools USA, Florida-based operator of the Senoia school, on May 23 published a letter for parents that noted two potential solutions to the outcome of the judicial ruling. State provides waiver process for charter schools

Those interested in charter schools know that the Georgia Supreme Court on May 16 determined that the Georgia Charter School Commission’s creation of a number of charter schools was unconstitutional. Now, the Georgia Dept. of Education (DOE), in response to requests from various charter schools, is offering a process to those schools wanting to apply to become state-chartered special schools. Newnan holding online auction of surplus property

The City of Newnan is currently auctioning off surplus property consisting of seven vehicles. Bids will be accepted online at www.publicsurplus.com until June 8 at 3 p.m. All items are sold “as-is, where-is” and no warranty is implied or expressed by the City of Newnan. 

The successful bidder is responsible for pick-up of the vehicle(s) once payment is made. The vehicles may be inspected at the City Shop located at 55 Boone Drive in Newnan from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily until June 8.   Read More»

Coweta Charter Academy holds town hall meeting June 2

The Coweta Charter Academy at Senoia on Ga. Highway 16 will hold a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. on June 2. The meeting follows the recent decision by the Georgia Supreme Court that the Georgia Charter School Commission, the organization that approved the school last year, is unconstitutional.

3 hurt in 3-car collision

This vehicle was involved in a 3-car collision May 25, 2011 on Ga. Highway 74 between Peachtree Parkway and the Peachtree City limits.

Three people were taken to the hospital after this car and two others collided in a wreck early this evening on Ga. Highway 74 between Peachtree Parkway and the Peachtree City limits.

None of the injured were suspected to have life-threatening injuries.

While this vehicle caught fire after coming to rest in the median, the other two vehicles left the road and ended up in the woodline on either side of the highway, police said.

Hwy. 74 was closed for a time in both directions, though northbound traffic resumed around 8:30 p.m.

Sheriffs arrest 2 for Hwy. 138 shooting

Victim remains hospitalized, recovering from incident

Two arrests have been made in connection with the shooting of a 56-year-old man who was walking along Ga. Highway 138 May 12, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

Dwayne Alfonzo Roberts, 18, and an unnamed juvenile, 16, both of Riverdale, were taken into custody May 24, officials said.

Meanwhile the victim remains at Atlanta Medical Center where he is still being treated for injuries he received during the assault, according to sheriff's investigators. The victim was shot in the abdomen and also struck multiple times during the assault, officials said. Read More»

Class of 2011: 5 Fayette high schools to graduate 1,799 Friday

The time that every high school student waits for is almost here. Graduation ceremonies will be held May 27 at the football stadiums at Fayette County’s five high schools.
