Chiefs fall 3-0 in game for state AAAA soccer title

Unable to overcome a tenacious Chattahoochee defense, the McIntosh men’s soccer team managed to keep Saturday night’s AAAA championship game close right up until the end.

It was nothing short of a hero’s welcome for Lt. Commander Luke Suber (USN) and Lt. Commander John Voight (USN) when they arrived at the Coweta County airport May 11 and rode with Merry Nicholson’s first-grade class on a school bus back to Willis Road Elementary School near Sharpsburg. The trip to the Georgia school was Suber’s way of saying thanks for the many CARE packages and letters he and others received while stationed recently in Afghanistan. Read More»

B’day candle sets off blaze in house fire

A house fire at 130 Nix Court near Fayetteville during the early afternoon hours May 13 resulted in heavy damage but no injuries to the two residents in the house at the time of the blaze. Firefighters at the scene learned that the cause of the fire was apparently related to a young child playing with a birthday candle.

Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Lt. Donnie Davis said two residents were at home at the time of the blaze and called 911 to report the fire. Davis said firefighters and emergency crews from Fayette FES and the Fayetteville Fire Department responded. Read More»

Help sought to find 2 in Hwy. 138 shooting

The public's help is being sought to identify two men who shot a 56-year-old man during an attack on Ga. Highway 138 near the Clayton County line at 7:40 p.m. last night.

The assailants were described as black males approximately 18 to 25 years old, shirtless and wearing blue jeans that were slightly rolled up at the bottom, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. A witness at the scene reported that one of the suspects was about six feet tall and the other was shorter.

The victim was shot in the abdomen and had other injuries from the assault, deputies said. The motive for the attack is unclear at this point, as investigators have been unable to interview the victim as he is being treated at Atlanta Medical Center. Read More»

Work on Hwy. 16 and I-85 to cause delays

Road work on Ga. Highway 16 eastbound from Carroll County to Ga. Highway 14 into Newnan and on I-85 northbound from Ga. Highway 34 to Ga. Highway 154 is ongoing and is expected to result in traffic delays. Work is expected to be completed on I-85 by May 18 while the work on Hwy. 16 carries an expected completion date of May 31. The Coweta County Fire Department is about to add a piece of equipment to its roster that, though quite small and not very costly, could pay big dividends during emergencies.
