Traffic alert for Newnan Sept. 23

The Newnan Police Dept., Newnan Fire Dept. and Atlanta Gas Light will be conducting a training exercise on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The exercise will take place on East Washington Street, east of the railroad tracks to Murray Street.

A simulated gas line rupture will be created. After this a phone call will be made to the 911 center advising them this is a training exercise at which time they will dispatch police and fire units to the scene. Read More»

Two Coweta high schools named to a prestigious list

Two of Coweta County’s high schools placed in the top 10 percent of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” in a report by the Washington Post.

East Coweta and Northgate high schools were among 2,149 public and private high schools nationwide to make the list, placing them in the top 10 percent of the 22,000 high schools surveyed, said Coweta County School System spokesman Dean Jackson. Read More»

F’ville, county come to terms on automatic aid pact

Both city and county residents may see some changes in fire department service with the adoption of a new pact between the Fayetteville City Council and the Fayette County Commission that pares down automatic responses into each other’s territories to only fire calls, and also limits the number of units automatically crossing territories for each call.

The City Council agreed to the plan last week and the County Commission is expected to do the same at its Thursday afternoon meeting. Read More»

PTC off-duty cop snags fraudster

A Mableton man was arrested by Peachtree City police officers on Sept. 5 after using a stolen credit card to purchase thousands of dollars in gift cards.

Travis Tyree Johnson, 47, was charged with three counts of financial transaction card fraud, two counts of first degree forgery, one count of financial transaction card theft and one count of obstruction, according to department spokesman Mark Brown.

Brown said that while off duty at the Rite Aid pharmacy at Ga. highways 54 and 74, Cpl. James Beato observed a man trying to buy more than $2,000 worth of Visa gift cards. Read More»

Vacuum cleaner thieves nabbed after chase

The attempt by three men to steal vacuum cleaners from a store in Peachtree City then get away clean did not pan out as they expected. A pursuit by Tyrone police officers ended with the getaway car crashing into a telephone pole in Union City.

Samuel Etuk, 28, of Riverdale, was charged by Tyrone officers with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, shoplifting and nearly a dozen other charges relating to the incident, according to Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins.

Ryan Bing, 28, of Bradenton, Fla., was charged with obstruction, according to Tyrone police. Read More»

Judge talks about public safety

A course on Public Safety and the Law, part of a Career/Tech pathway, is being offered at Whitewater High for the first time this year.

Fayette County State Court Judge Jason B. Thompson addressed the class shortly after the start of the school year. He spoke about the training and education needed to become a judge, as well as the different types of courts and their functions in Fayette County.

Judge Thompson applauded the idea of having a high school course on Public Safety and the Law, and offered his help where needed. Read More»

Students take top math honors at boot camp

After a grueling competition of solving math problems from pre-algebra to calculus, students from Flat Rock Middle and Sandy Creek High took home five top place trophies at the third annual Morehouse Math Boot Camp.

Taylor Howell, a senior at Sandy Creek, is the competition’s overall winner.

Phaidra Buchanan, a 10th grader at Sandy Creek, won the overall award in both the eighth and ninth grade competitions. She has also won overall awards in the competition for the last two years. Read More»

Roundabout is set for Lower Fayetteville Road

The Newnan Centre will soon have a new entrance on Lower Fayetteville Road. The installation of a roundabout is underway just west of the current entrance shared with the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts. Photo/Ben Nelms.

Slow traffic conditions along portions of Lower Fayetteville Road have existed for years. But a portion of the back-ups in the area of the Centre for Performing and Visual and Arts and the Newnan Centre will be mitigated with the construction of a roundabout west of the current entrance.

Situated immediately to the west of the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, the Newnan Centre that opened last year will have its own entrance once the roundabout project is completed. Read More»
