Chiefs snap losing streak against Panthers

Wildcats, Tigers and Patriots also get region wins

After a week where it appeared almost everything went wrong for the McIntosh Chiefs, everything went right. From big third down conversions, good spots and penalties that killed Panther drives, McIntosh appeared to be in control from the start and they capitalized. The Chiefs beat Starr's Mill 30-13, producing their first ever win against the Panthers and improving to 5-2 on the season.

Fayette school system’s cost-cutting committee downsizes budget targets

Cost savings of $3 million instead of $5 million are more realistic for this year’s school system budget, Fayette County Assistant Superintendent Sam Sweat told members of the Board of Education at the Oct. 15 meeting.

Among the various cost-saving measures underway in the Fayette County School System are the efforts of a committee to shave current expenses to help offset up to a $20 million shortfall in next year’s budget. Read More»

40 parents, students complain to Fayette BoE, while committee awaits ‘property deal’

Redrawing Fayette County schools’ attendance zones has been put on hold, pending an unspecified property deal now being negotiated, according to Superintendent Jeff Bearden.

School system’s online survey asks public to spell out priorities

The process for selecting a new superintendent for the Fayette County School System is underway. A part of that process is an online survey located on the school system’s website. The process became necessary following the Sept. 19 announcement of a “mutual termination agreement” between the Fayette County Board of Education and Superintendent Jeff Bearden.

The survey includes nine question and comment areas. A number of the questions list optional answers indicating if the item is considered mandatory, important but not mandatory or not considered very important. Read More»

Charter schools amendment on ballot draws heat

Long-time Georgia political commentator and GeorgiaInsight.org creator Sue Ella Deadwyler had her sights set Monday night on the defeat of the charter schools amendment that will go before voters on Nov. 6.

The main thrust of Deadwyler’s comments before approximately 50 people at the Harvest Christian Community Center in Fayetteville dealt with her position that charter schools are unconstitutional and that they compromise the local control of boards of education. Read More»

PTO presidents get ESPLOST info from Sup’t. Bearden at Fayette Chamber

PTO presidents representing Fayette County schools packed the house at the Fayette Chamber of Commerce last month as Superintendent Dr. Jeff Bearden addressed immediate challenges facing the public school system.

Topics included updates on the school redistricting process, school finances and budget and information on November election issues including the ESPLOST and the Charter Schools Amendment.

Dr. Bearden spoke at length about what the current ESPLOST has funded and how the continued ESPLOST, if approved Nov. 6, would be used. Read More»

Northgate lands top score in 2012 SAT

Coweta County’s SAT scores for 2012 are in. The results show Northgate High School with an average score of 1,528, the highest average of the county’s three high schools.

Coweta County School System spokesman Dean Jackson said the SAT results at Northgate High topped the county list in 2012 with an average score of 1,528. Newnan High followed with an average of 1,475 and an average of 1,428 at East Coweta High. The combined county average was 1,476. That figure was 24 points higher than the state average, Jackson said. Read More»
