Community weighs in on superintendent search

The search for a new superintendent for the Fayette County School System is underway. A recently completed community survey had the community giving its perspective on issues such as academic and business experience and leadership capability.

A sampling of survey results showed that nearly 53 percent of respondents thought having a doctorate was important but not mandatory. Approximately 34 percent thought it was mandatory while 13 percent did not consider the degree very important. Read More»

Kindergarteners rock the vote

Big wins for several locals in regular season finale

Several of Friday night's football games had playoff implications but few of them had much drama.

Landmark Christian (7-3), ranked 10th by MaxPreps, traveled to McDonough to meet the top ranked ELCA Chargers and lost 43-0. The Chargers presented a stifling defense and scored pretty much at will. Keyante Green was a force on offense for ELCA and Landmark had no answer. ELCA won the region. Landmark will make the playoffs, but the Class A private bracket has not been set yet. Read More»

Bearden misses cut for Floyd County top job

Fayette County School System Superintendent Jeff Bearden lost out in his bid to become the next head of the Floyd County School System. Bearden was one of two finalists for the top job, but the Floyd County Board of Education on Nov. 5 selected one of its own to fill the position.

The northwest Georgia board voted Monday to hire Jeff McDaniel, the school system’s chief of academics.

That leaves Bearden without a job when his “mutual termination” from the Fayette system becomes effective Dec. 31 this year. Read More»

Students and teachers await an airborne visitor at PTC Elementary

An Army Black Hawk helicopter surprised the students at Peachtree City Elementary School Thursday morning for a special visit to coincide with the school’s early celebration of Veterans Day. The helicopter crew was able to stay through the afternoon and give classes guided tours of the bird, which kicked up a good bit of dust as it landed in an open field adjacent to the school. Fayette schools schedule forum about bullying

The Fayette County School System will hold a community forum on bullying on Oct. 30 at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville.

Bullying is the topic of the first community forum for this school year that is being sponsored by the Fayette County Public School System, the Fayette County District Attorney, Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, Fayetteville Police Department, Peachtree City Police Department, and the NAACP, according to school system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach. Panthers crowned Grand Champion

Starr’s Mill High Panther Pride Marching Band wowed the crowd and judges at the Heart of Georgia marching competition in Warner Robins Oct. 20 with their show “Viva Espana!” The Pride took the top award of Grand Champion over 16 other bands from across the state with a score of 95.58. They were also awarded a Superior rating in every category. Judged against all other performers, the Panther band took Best Visual Effect, Best Music, Best Overall Effect designations.
