Guide aimed at recruiting more math mentors

Math is a subject many people shy away from and students dread learning. The Fayette County Public Schools Friends Mentoring Program is hoping to change math’s stigma for both adults and students.

A taskforce, made up of current and former math teachers and retired business people, has just started working on a math guidebook that will be used by volunteer mentors to help students at all grade levels. The book will outline sound teaching practices that go along with the Georgia Mathematics Performance Standards. Read More»

Second graders at Braelinn Elementary ‘Jump Rope for Heart’

Students at Braelinn Elementary in Peachtree City jumped at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. In February at Braelinn Elementary the first, second and third graders held their second annual Jump Rope For Heart event.

Students jumped rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs. Read More»

Peeples Elementary School fourth-grade enrichment students took a field trip to the Fayette County Crime Lab recently. The students were impressed to learn how local CSI officers use fingerprinting and shoe-printing, get help from drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs, and store evidence and weapons. Booth kids participate in Vision Walk

Warrior Team Demmitt raised $615 at the Vision Walk on Mar. 14.

On Sunday Mar. 14, the JC Booth Middle School Builders Club participated in the Vision Walk in Atlanta. Vision Walk is the national signature fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Since its inception in the Spring of 2006, the program has raised over $10 million to fund sight-saving research.  Booth’s “Warrior Team Demmitt”  walked the three miles to support Mrs. Demmitt, the J.C. Booth nurse, who is gradually going blind due to an eye disease.

 Warrior Team Demmitt raised $615, double the amount from last year.  The event raised a total of $101, 615.32.

The Starr’s Mill debate team qualified six students for the National Forensics League 2010 national tournament. The students were qualified by taking first or second place in their event at the Georgia Southern Peach District Tournament in Warner Robbins Georgia on Feb. 27. Read More»
