Fayette is a top performer on ACT

2011 ACT test scores show that Fayette County’s high school seniors are among the most prepared for college-level coursework in the state and nation.

Fayette posted a composite score of 23.0, up from 22.6 last year. In comparison to state and national composite scores, state schools scored 20.6 and schools nationwide scored 21.1. That puts Fayette 2.4 points ahead of the state composite and 1.9 points ahead of the nation. Read More»

Bonnell Aluminum makes big donation to Coweta 3rd graders

Employees of the Newnan’s Bonnell Aluminum company visited all 19 elementary schools in Coweta County this week, personally delivering over 1,600 Merriam-Webster dictionaries to students in every third grade class.

It is the tenth year the Newnan company has sponsored the county-wide donation, which is intended to promote literacy and academic skills among Coweta County elementary students, said school system spokesperson Dean Jackson. Read More»

Annual college fair coming to CEC on Oct. 3

The 2011 “Probe” college fair will be held this Monday, Oct. 3, 6-8 p.m. at the Central Educational Center (CEC) in Newnan.

The annual Probe Fair is open to all Coweta County high school students, and features representatives from 70 universities colleges and technical schools, with admissions materials available for interested students.  Read More»

200 race in Cougar Run

Fayetteville Intermediate School held their annual Cougar Run 5K last Saturday. The event is part of the Peachtree City Rotary Club Elementary Grand Prix race series. The series raises money for the schools. Last year the series raised around $100,000. The Cougar 5K featured over 200 runners of all ages. Region wins for Whitewater, Sandy Creek and Landmark football teams

Three local teams are riding a winning streak and all three picked up sizable region wins Friday night.

Whitewater beat Starr’s Mill 31-9, Sandy Creek beat Henry County 34-17 and Landmark Christian beat Whitefield Academy 34-10.

Fayette County lost to Harris County 7-6 and McIntosh lost to Northgate 30-14.

Coweta SAT scores beat state average by 40 points

SAT scores for 2011 are in and Coweta County students from East Coweta High, Northgate High and Newnan High averaged 1,485 combined points, besting the state average by 40 points. The county’s high scorers were from Northgate High School where the average score from the three-section test totaled 1,525 points.

The SAT includes test sections on Math, Verbal and Writing. Coweta students taking the SAT in 2011 averaged a total of 1,485 combined points. That puts Coweta students 40 points above the state average and 15 points shy of the national average. Read More»

Fayette school enrollment still lags pace of previous years, down 726

There was a hope that a significant number of students would enroll in Fayette County schools by the time this year’s third enrollment count was taken on Sept. 15. Some did enroll, but not nearly enough to take a bite out of the continuing fall in total enrollment that has been occurring since 2008. The Sept. 15 count showed 20,442 students compared to 21,168 for the same date in 2010, a difference of 726 fewer students in one year. In the end, enrollment is tied to funding, with every 250 students generating approximately $1 million in state funding. Read More»

McIntosh #1 in county as local high schools excel in Ga. SATs

Fayette County public schools are known for their quality education and high student test scores. Those high scores continued in 2011 with Fayette students scoring even higher in the SAT tests, besting their previous score by nine points, the state’s score by 95 points and the national average by 50 points.

The 2011 SAT scores also had all Fayette high schools scoring in the top 30 percent of all Georgia schools, with McIntosh tallying the 17th highest score out of 434 schools and with Starr’s Mill at 23rd, Whitewater at 66th, Fayette County at 71st and Sandy Creek at 132nd. Read More»

CEC Broadcast Video program receives PBS donation

The Central Educational Center’s Broadcast Video program is getting a boost thanks to Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB).

GPB has donated studio set pieces from its Atlanta production studios to CEC’s student videography program. The donations include set walls, windows, doors, and artistic stage pieces that have been used at GPB for various television productions for the past 20 years. Read More»
