Welch Elem. 5th grader county’s best speller

Tevyn Fudge, of Welch Elementary school, was the winner of Coweta County’s 2012 district-wide Spelling Bee, held at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Feb. 6.

Fudge, a 5th grader at Welch, became the county’s 2012 spelling bee champion in the 35th round of the annual bee. It was the second time that Fudge had appeared on the Centre’s stage as a top Coweta speller. He won the second-place spot in last year’s county-wide bee. Read More»

All of Fayette’s high schools make state’s AP Honor List

All five of Fayette’s public high schools made Georgia’s 2012 list of AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Schools, with each earning recognition in multiple categories based on the results of AP exams.

AP classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit. AP classes and exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. Read More»

Fayette schools pick finalists for Teacher of the Year award

The Fayette County School System has announced its three finalists for Fayette County Teacher of the Year 2012. They are Chris Cannon from Sandy Creek High School, Malia Bergstrom from Fayette County High School and Whitewater High School’s Jacqueline Mullen.

School system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said there was no doubting a career in journalism for Chris Cannon, an advanced placement government and economics teacher at Sandy Creek High. Read More»

19 Fayette schools cited by state for high academic performances

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Student Achievement has recognized 19 of Fayette County’s 28 public schools for high academic performance during the 2010-2011 school year.

Across Fayette’s system, 11 elementary, four middle and four high schools received award designations of platinum, gold, silver or bronze based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status.

The kindergarten classes at Peeples Elementary School recently celebrated the 100th day of school. Activities included creating necklaces using one hundred fruit loops, making 100th day hats, and drawing pictures of how they would look when they are one hundred years old. Students also dressed up like they were 100 years old. The Fayette County School System is currently working off of a budget for the 2011-2012 school year that projected $170 million in revenues and more than $186 million in expenses. The Central Educational Center’s Broadcast Video program has received a $30,000 donation of camera and studio equipment from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.

The donation to the Coweta County CEC consisted of studio-equipped cameras and a Sony digital video switcher, valued at approximately $30,000, according to school system spokesman Dean Jackson.
