Barlow: ‘Drug test us, too’

County to consider deal moving Main Street program to courthouse

New Fayette County Commissioner David Barlow wants he and his fellow commissioners to be subject to the same random drug testing program that is used on county employees.

Barlow will make his pitch Thursday night at the commission’s regular meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the county government complex in downtown Fayetteville.

The county’s substance abuse policy requires testing for alcohol and controlled substances such as marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, PCP and prescription medication in excess of normal amounts. Read More»

From cross-country competitors to air war teammates

Christopher Taylor and Mark Russell spent their high school days as rivals: running against each other in cross country. Taylor ran for the McIntosh squad and Russell was on the Starr’s Mill team.

Both graduated in 2003, but their paths have crossed again: this time as they joined forces in combating terrorism in the Middle East. The two have shared the cockpit of a F-15E Strike Eagle, with Taylor at the stick and Mark in the back seat as weapons officer. Read More»

ENCORE! Fayette expands outreach

Some will remember it as ENCORE! Fayette, the initiative that formed in 2009 and was Georgia’s first older-adult volunteer leadership program. Today the emphasis has expanded and the organization will begin holding classes in late January under a new name that expands its vision: ENCORE! Fayette — Center for Creative Involvement.

Hwy. 54 W. postal annex may close

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) like many corporations continues to look for ways to cut costs. Though no decision has been made, the USPS carrier annex that opened a few years ago on Ga. Highway 54 just west of Fayetteville is being considered for closure.

USPS Corporate Communications representative for the Atlanta District Michael Miles said Tuesday the closure of the Hwy. 54 carrier annex building is up for consideration and is being studied, though no decision on the issue has been made.
