Collusion, bribery charges lobbed at attorneys in settlement over commission district seats

Attorneys on both sides of a federal lawsuit over Fayette County’s new court-ordered five-district map for seats on the county commission are taking shots at each other.

Coweta near top in health insurance coverage

A review released by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that Coweta County has the eighth highest percentage residents with health insurance when compared to Georgia’s 159 counties.

The most recent data supplied by the bureau’s Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) showed Coweta County in 2010 with 82.4 percent of its residents with health insurance. Read More»

EMCs send additional crews to Mississippi

The number of Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) employees headed to hard hit areas following Hurricane Isaac continues to grow, as cooperatives in the region, including Coweta-Fayette EMC, survey damage and begin repairs to the electric distribution system.

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, approximately 160 employees from 15 EMCs in Georgia had traveled to Mississippi to help restore power to thousands of consumers without electricity. Read More»

PTC resident dines at President’s table during Iftar at nation’s capitol

Peachtree City resident Soumaya Khalifa got the thrill of a lifetime recently when she was invited to the White House in Washington, D.C. to be a guest of President Barack Obama at a special Iftar, a dinner where Muslims break their day-long fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

In fact, Khalifa sat at the President’s table during the dinner, which is an annual tradition that dates back to the days of President Abraham Lincoln and though it fell by the wayside was revived in recent years by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Read More»

Pathway House for women approved in east Coweta

A faith-based transitional home for women in need was approved by unanimous vote at the Aug. 21 meeting of the Coweta County Commission. Operated by R.E.A.L. Change, Inc., the Pathway Home on Ga. Frank Harper recognized with the National Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award

Frank Harper, Council Commissioner of the Flint River Council, has been presented with Scouting’s national Distinguished Service Award for his years of service and commitment to the youth of the Scouting program.

Only 25 individuals from Georgia have ever received the Distinguished Service Award. Harper is just the second Scouter in the history of the Flint River Council to receive the honor, and is the first to be honored with the award in the last 49 years. Read More»

ARC count: Fayette growth slows

It has been no surprise that the lingering affects of the recession have impacted population growth in the 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission area. Population estimates around the ARC area for the two-year period from 2010-2012 showed that growth is slowing across the region. In Fayette County, the population increased by an estimated 934 residents, the second lowest population increase in the ARC.

Fayette County’s 2010 population was 106,567. Over the two succeeding years that number grew to 107,501, a difference of approximately 467 residents per year, according to ARC. Read More»
