Arson suspect arrested hours after blaze; pools, building to remain closed for cleanup

The fire sprinkler system saved Kedron Fieldhouse from being destroyed by fire early Thursday morning, but a malfunction in the fire alarm system resulted in the facility being under two inches of water because a switch failed to send an alert to the city’s alarm monitoring company, officials said.

“The sprinklers saved that building,” Peachtree City Fire Chief Ed Eiswerth told the city council Thursday night. “Otherwise instead of cleaning up the building, we’d be moving it with a bulldozer. There’s no doubt that sprinkler saved that building.” Read More»

Soldier’s sacrifice saluted in Fayetteville

All was silent Saturday morning as crowds lined Ga. Highway 85 in downtown Fayetteville as another fallen soldier was borne to his final resting place. Killed in Afghanistan after his unit was attacked with an IED on June 7, the body of Pfc. Brandon D. Goodine was transported from Falcon Field to Henry County where he attended school. 1-car crash in Woolsey kills Griffin man

A Griffin man died Tuesday after his car ran off the road on Ga. Highway 92 south in Woolsey, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

John M. Fulop, 63, was driving south on Hwy. 92 in his 1994 BMW 325i when the crash occurred just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, officials said. He was traveling by himself, deputies said.

According to the investigation, Fulop’s vehicle was approaching a curve on the highway but for an unknown reason it continued on a straight path, leaving the roadway. Read More»

Newnan to residents: don’t feed stray/feral cats

It seems like such an innocent practice. But there is a lot more involved. Newnan’s stray and feral cat population continues to grow and the city is asking residents to refrain from feeding the furry animals that tend to congregate behind shopping centers. Those found feeding them could be subject to a citation.

“While it is understandable citizens have concern for these animals it does prohibit us from doing our job to trap and relocate these strays if citizens continue feeding them,” said Newnan Animal Warden Cyndi Hoffman. Read More»

Sheriff’s K-9 dog gets loose, bites Walmart worker

A Fayetteville Walmart employee was bitten by a Fayette Sheriff’s K-9 early Thursday morning after the vehicle housing the dog became unlocked in the parking lot.

The 57-second incident was caught on the store’s video and showed no one opening the door prior the dog exiting the vehicle. The “bail-out” system on the vehicle is being replaced after a subsequent call to the manufacturer identified problems with similar units. Read More»

Fire truck vs. auto in Tyrone; car driver injured

Tyrone resident Coleman Taylor, 17, was traveling on Tyrone Road near Ga. Highway 74 Monday morning and was preparing to turn right into a business parking lot when he made an abrupt U-turn and was hit by the Fayette County fire truck that was behind his vehicle. Coleman was transported to Atlanta Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and was later charged with making an improper U-turn, according to Maj. Tyrone golf cart mishap injures 12-year-old girl

A 12-year-old Tyrone girl was injured May 26 when the golf cart she was riding in overturned. The driver of the golf cart, also a 12-year-old girl, was uninjured. Though only suffering “road rash,” the injured girl was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta for treatment.

Tyrone Police Maj. Van Brock said the accident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. in the Chimney Springs subdivision when the driver of the golf cart lost control as it picked up speed while traveling on a downhill course. The golf cart was estimated to have been traveling at 15-20 miles per hour, Brock said. Read More»

Speeding vehicle burns, Tyrone man seriously injured

A Tyrone man was seriously injured Tuesday night in a single-car accident after his vehicle left the roadway on Ga. Highway 74 North and burst into flames. The injured man was air-lifted to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Fayette County Sheriff's Office Maj. Bryan Woodie said the office’s Traffic Enforcement Section is investigating the single-vehicle traffic crash which resulted in serious injuries to the driver. PTC woman, 42, seriously hurt by DUI golf cart driver after The Fred concert

A Peachtree City woman required surgery for a double fracture to her leg after being struck and dragged by a Peachtree City man on a golf cart who was cited for DUI (alcohol) following a May 26 concert at the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater.

William Helm, 57, of Peachtree City, was charged by Peachtree City Police with DUI (alcohol) in connection with striking a 48-year-old Peachtree City woman as she was walking with her husband on the cart path following the concert. Read More»
