Behind the big booms, light show on 4th, plenty of work

As the rain left the area in plenty of time, there was again much to enjoy about Peachtree City’s annual fireworks display July 4th.

But there’s plenty of work done in advance to make sure the show goes off smoothly, according to Shawn Hardy of Liberty Pyrotechnics.

The display was actually prepared several days in advance, with security staying on-site 24 hours a day until after the big show.

UPDATED: Resident jumps 2 floors to escape N. Fayette fire

UPDATED for print — Fire heavily damaged a north Fayette home Monday afternoon, forcing the home’s occupant to jump from a second floor window to avoid the mounting flames, fire officials said.

The fire at 118 Windmeadow Way in the Stillbrook Estates subdivision caused heavy damage on the interior, eating through the roof, much of the second floor and extending to the first floor.

Fire officials determined that a candle on the ground floor of the home somehow started the blaze. Read More»

Security system false alarms about to get costly in F’ville

Get ready to pay a fine for a false alarm from your security system if you live in Fayetteville.

Starting Monday, July 16, Fayetteville will begin enforcing its false alarm ordinance.

“Alarm users will be billed for false alarm activations which occur on, or after this date,” according to Detective Mike Whitlow of the Fayetteville Police Department. “Alarm users who have not registered their alarms will also be fined if they have an alarm activation and there is no current registration on file for that user.” Read More»

F’ville PD honors its 5th class of Citizens Police Academy graduates

The Fayetteville Police Department last month completed yet another Citizens Police Academy. Now in its fifth year, the 2012 class consisted of 11 of Fayetteville’s citizens.

Department spokesman Steve Crawshaw said the academy was hosted in an effort to increase the community involvement with the Fayetteville Police Department and offer insight into the services provided. Read More»

Feeling like a firefighter

The Public Safety Expo at Drake Field in Peachtree City on July 4 gave visitors a good sense of what police officers and firefighters do and what equipment they use. PTC, Fayette officials: Take precautions in 100-degree heat wave into next week

F’ville extinguishes fire dept. merger with Fayette

Arson suspect arrested hours after blaze; pools, building to remain closed for cleanup

The fire sprinkler system saved Kedron Fieldhouse from being destroyed by fire early Thursday morning, but a malfunction in the fire alarm system resulted in the facility being under two inches of water because a switch failed to send an alert to the city’s alarm monitoring company, officials said.

“The sprinklers saved that building,” Peachtree City Fire Chief Ed Eiswerth told the city council Thursday night. “Otherwise instead of cleaning up the building, we’d be moving it with a bulldozer. There’s no doubt that sprinkler saved that building.” Read More»

Soldier’s sacrifice saluted in Fayetteville

All was silent Saturday morning as crowds lined Ga. Highway 85 in downtown Fayetteville as another fallen soldier was borne to his final resting place.
