Police pack piles of old pills

Peachtree City residents turned in approximately 193 pounds of old and unused medication for disposal at a special event hosted by the Peachtree City Police Department and the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Saturday. Outdoor burning OK starting Oct. 1

The annual outdoor burning ban in metro Atlanta is being lifted Friday, Oct. 1.

The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services will allow residential burning of leaves, yard clippings and brush limbs. The department has also established several restrictions on the burning as follows:

• The burning pile size shall be no larger than 10 feet wide, 10 feet long and 10 feet high;

• The burning pile shall not exceed 1,000 cubic feet of material;

• No more than one pile shall be burning at a time;

• All burning shall be at least 50 feet away from any structure; Read More»

Lawmen host pill disposal events in PTC, Fayetteville

Local residents are being asked to dispose of their expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and over the counter medications in an effort to keep them out of the wrong hands.

And to make it easier, there will be two different locations in Fayette County where such medicine can be anonymously dropped off on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Peachtree City Police Department will be accepting such medications in an “Operation Pill Drop” roundup in the parking lot of the K-Mart in the Braelinn Village shopping center. Read More»

The Powers Festival in west Coweta County is nothing if not the most unique experience around, at least in terms of finding a good bargain and grabbing a bite to eat while watching a bit of live entertainment. The festival’s 40th anniversary was held last weekend and, as usual, drew countless thousands for whom shopping under the large shade trees adds to the uniqueness of the event.

PTC police on DUI lookout Labor Day weekend

The Peachtree City Police Department will be participating in a statewide crackdown over the Labor Day holiday to target alcohol and drug-impaired drivers.

Police will be conducting various sobriety checkpoints over the Labor Day weekend as part of Georgia’s Operation Zero Tolerance.

Impaired motorists caught driving at or above the limit of .08 blood alcohol content will be arrested, officials said.

Some 30 percent of the fatal highway crashes in Georgia are caused by impaired drivers, according to Bob Dallas, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Read More»

Palmetto house fire claims three lives

Malfunctioning medical equipment has been named as the cause of a house fire Tuesday morning in Palmetto that claimed the lives of three of its occupants.

Though the investigation is continuing, the state fire marshal and Georgia Insurance and Fire Commissioner John Oxendine have concluded that the fire started as a result of malfunctioning medical equipment. Read More»

Nearly 75 people gathered late Friday afternoon at the intersection of Huiet Road/West Fayetteville Bypass and Ga. Highway 54 to silently protest the opening of the southbound lanes prior to the installation of the traffic signal. Fresh on their minds, some said, was the death last week of Peachtree City resident Amy Layton that resulted from a traffic crash as she was attempting to turn west onto Hwy. 54 from the newly opened southbound lanes of the bypass. New route approved for F’ville Xmas parade

The Fayetteville City Council Aug. 5 approved a new route for the Main Street Christmas Parade to be held Dec. 4. The route will begin and end at the Fayette County Justice Center southeast of town after making its way through a portion of the downtown area.

Main Street Director Brian Wismer in promoting the new route said city staff, along with the Fayetteville Police Department, devised the new route that will begin at the Justice Center and proceed west to South Glynn Street. The parade will go north to Stonewall Avenue, east to Lee Street and back to the Justice Center. Read More»

Hwy. 74S to be re-routed for repairs

A section of Ga. Highway 74 South will be closed several days over an upcoming weekend so crews can work on drainage for the road widening project.

Hwy. 74 between Rockaway Road and Redwine Road will be closed Friday evening Aug. 27 and it will reopen very early Monday morning Aug. 30, according to an advisory from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Motorists in the area will be detoured onto Holly Grove, Robinson and Redwine Roads to circumvent the closed work area on the highway. Read More»
