B’day candle sets off blaze in house fire

A house fire at 130 Nix Court near Fayetteville during the early afternoon hours May 13 resulted in heavy damage but no injuries to the two residents in the house at the time of the blaze. Firefighters at the scene learned that the cause of the fire was apparently related to a young child playing with a birthday candle.

Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Lt. Donnie Davis said two residents were at home at the time of the blaze and called 911 to report the fire. Davis said firefighters and emergency crews from Fayette FES and the Fayetteville Fire Department responded. Read More»

Work on Hwy. 16 and I-85 to cause delays

Road work on Ga. Highway 16 eastbound from Carroll County to Ga. Highway 14 into Newnan and on I-85 northbound from Ga. Highway 34 to Ga. Highway 154 is ongoing and is expected to result in traffic delays. Work is expected to be completed on I-85 by May 18 while the work on Hwy. 16 carries an expected completion date of May 31. Motorists traveling along Luther Bailey Road in southeast Coweta County outside Senoia will see detours beginning May 12 and extending through Nov. 8 while crews demolish the bridge at Double Branch Creek and construct the replacement bridge. Read More»

Small package, big payoff in emergencies

The Coweta County Fire Department is about to add a piece of equipment to its roster that, though quite small and not very costly, could pay big dividends during emergencies. Dumping old pills for the environment's sake

Food, items needed for Spalding Co. tornado victims

A donation center has been opened to assist victims from the tornados that hit Spalding County last week.

Donation center open in Griffin

A call has been put out for nonperishable food and other goods needed to help victims of last week’s tornados in Spalding County, where 341 homes and businesses were either damaged or destroyed.

Donations will be received at 819 Memorial Drive in Griffin, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. Read More»

Hams network wirelessly to spot storms for PTC’s National Weather Service office

A network of amateur radio operators trained as severe weather spotters served as crucial “eyes and ears” in advance of last week’s devastating tornado-producing storms, according to local weather officials.

The SKYWARN network provided crucial information that in some cases confirmed the violent nature of storms that were appearing on the radar screens of the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, said Meteorologist in Charge Lans Rothfusz. Read More»

UPDATED: Churches lead the way to help tornado-ravaged community

Coweta dodges big weather bullet

A system of severe thunderstorms swept through Coweta County during the nighttime hours April 27. One of those storm systems tracking to the northeast out of the area of Heard and Troup counties entered Coweta near Grantville, apparently spawning a tornado. Unlike many areas in Georgia and the South that night the storm system spared Coweta from significant destruction.

“I think we dodged a big bullet compared to other places,” said Coweta County Emergency Management Agency Director Jay Jones. Read More»
