North Fayette crash kills Riverdale woman

A Riverdale woman died late Wednesday morning after her car ran off the road in north Fayette County, sheriff’s officials said today.

Maria Garcia, 45, was alone in her Mercury Mountaineer SUV going north on Ga. Highway 314 near Bethea Road when the crash occurred, officials said.

Deputies do not know why Garcia lost control of her vehicle, causing her to run off the roadway, officials said. Garcia was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and was thrown from the vehicle, deputies said. Read More»

Forecasters warn track change could intensify impact on Ga.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service are anticipating heavy rainfall of between 1-3 inches starting Tuesday afternoon and running through Friday as a result of what is now tropical storm Isaac.

None hurt as train collides with semi in Palmetto

A Louisville man and his passenger were uninjured Aug. 21 in an accident along U.S. Highway 29 in Palmetto when the tractor-trailer he was driving became hung up on the railroad tracks at the Vine Street crossing and was subsequently hit by an oncoming train. Read More»

Boot drive returning soon to PTC

Staff at the Peachtree City Fire Department are preparing to crank up their annual “boot drive” to collect funds for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.

The boot drive will take place Friday, Sept. 7 through Sunday, Sept. 9 at local shopping centers between 9 am. to noon and again from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Firefighters will be stationed at the Kedron Village shopping center, the Braelinn Village shopping center, the Peachtree Crossings East shopping center and the Peachtree City Walmart. Read More»

Deputies: second vehicle ran red light on Hwy. 54 near hospital

A two-car crash Friday afternoon claimed the life of a local teenager and left another teen hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Fayette County sheriff's deputies.

The crash killed Malcom Williams, 17, of Fayetteville and seriously injured Bismarck S. Delarosa, 18 of Fayetteville, deputies said.

Deputies said a second vehicle ran a red light and struck the 2004 Honda Accord which Delarosa was driving with Williams as a passenger. Read More»

Tyrone officer walks away from wrecked patrol car in high-speed chase

A Sunday afternoon traffic accident on Ga. Highway 74 in Tyrone involving a police patrol car and an SUV resulted in the two drivers being treated and released from area hospitals and the driver of the SUV charged. The Tyrone officer was chasing a speeder on Hwy. 74 when the accident occurred, causing his patrol vehicle to barrel-roll. Lt. Kids get behind the scenes look in Fayette Co. Fire Camp

More than a dozen children got a behind the scenes look at the Fayette County Fire Department during the first-ever “fire camp” last week.

The 16 participants ages 8 to 14 also got a lesson on CPR using practice mannequins and were shown how to use an AED (automatic external defibrillator) for cardiac emergencies.

Starting with an unconscious person on the ground, the group was taught to first see if the victim is just asleep or disoriented. The idea is to startle them with loud noise, and if they don’t respond, send someone to call 911. Read More»

Man dies trapped under overturned golf cart

The body of an elderly Fayette County man was discovered near his home early Monday afternoon pinned under a golf cart.

Frank Vines, 88, of 110 Scott Boulevard near the intersection of Tyrone and Ellison roads, was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Neighbors discovered the cart, which had gone down a ravine into a wooded area, and reported it to 911, officials said. EMS officials said Vines did not have any visible injuries, but he may have suffered from a medical problem that led to him being incapacitated, according to law enforcement officials. Read More»

1 PTC man dies, 1 injured in lightning strike

Peachtree City resident Burnette Hayes died after an apparent lightning strike Friday afternoon at the Battery Way boat ramp on Lake Peachtree. A second man regained consciousness while emergency crews were at the scene. Read More»
