Missouri woman charged with identity fraud

Fayette County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a Missouri woman on Nov. 10 on charges of identity fraud.

Chevell Chamberlyn, 30, of Lee Summit, Missouri, was charged with two counts of identity fraud, according to sheriff’s spokesperson Brent Rowan.

Rowan said the case involved Chamberlyn fraudulently using a Fayette County victim’s Heritage Bank account number to pay her AT&T phone bill in the amount of $432.86 and $285.65.

Rowan said the fraudulent charges occurred in November 2009.

PTC Police issue scam alert

The Peachtree City Police Thursday morning issued an alert to citizens to be aware of two versions of an internet “money scam” that has been reported in the city and surrounding areas.

Version 1:
Victims who are selling items via the internet are receiving checks for an amount significantly more than what the item is being sold for.
Once the check has been received by the victim, the offenders are requesting that the victim deposit the check and wire a third person the difference in the money actually owed and the amount of the check. Read More»

Fayetteville man, 18, charged in Oct. 11 traffic death

Eighteen-year-old Fayetteville resident Joshua Marcus Williams has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide in the Oct. 11 death of another Fayetteville man, James Buck, after Williams ran a stop sign at McBride and Antioch roads and crashed into Buck’s vehicle.

Williams was arrested over the weekend on charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, a misdemeanor, and failure to stop at a stop sign, according to officials with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. The charge of second-degree vehicular homicide was imposed because the death occurred without intent, officials said. Read More»

Local man admits to interfering with postal investigation

A Fayetteville man pled guilty Tuesday to leaking information about a federal investigation to a potential target of the probe, federal prosecutors said.

Randall T. Smith, 53, a postal carrier at the East Point Post Office, was accused of disclosing details of “how the agents were acquiring evidence in the case. This type of leak and abuse of position is not acceptable and he now has a federal criminal record.” Read More»

F’ville police school residents on avoiding identity fraud

The need for people to live with an enhanced awareness of identity theft was the resounding message by Fayetteville Police Det. Mike Whitlow Oct. 26 at a fraud prevention seminar held at the Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. Identity theft has been the fastest growing crime in the country for nearly a decade.

Whitlow at the seminar said such fraud includes many types of illegal operations like credit card theft, identity theft, fraudulent emails and skimming and counterfeiting checks. Read More»

PTC police hosting Facebook, online safety seminar

The Peachtree City Police Department is offering a class on online safety, particularly as it relates to the uber-popular social networking site Facebook.

The class will focus on features on Facebook and elsewhere online that can enhance safety and security, officials said. The class will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the police department.

In addition to an overview of safety and security features, there will also be a question and answer session to discuss all online and Internet-related topics, officials said. Read More»

Fayetteville Police arrested 25 year-old Coweta County resident David Travis Dennis late Thursday afternoon on charges of rape and incest pertaining to a 17 year-old relative who was visiting Fayetteville to attend a party to celebrate Dennis’ release from prison just one day prior to the crime.
