Fayette Chief Magistrate Floyd dies

Fayette County Chief Magistrate Charles R. "Chuck" Floyd.

Fayette County’s Chief Magistrate, Charles “Chuck” Floyd Jr., died overnight, court officials have said.

When Floyd, 53, was appointed to the position in 2002, he became Fayette’s first-ever African American judge. He subsequently was elected to the post in 2004 and won re-election in 2008.

Fellow Magistrate Bob Ruppenthal in a statement today said that Floyd “served the citizens of Fayette County with integrity.”

“Chuck will be greatly missed,” Ruppenthal said.

Details of Floyd’s death are unavailable and funeral arrangements are expected to be released later by the family. Read More»

Multiple drug arrests across Fayette

It has been a busy couple of weeks for agents with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT). Team Commander Jody Thomas announced Tuesday that six investigations into the sale, possession or use of illegal narcotics have been concluded with the investigations leading to the arrests of 13 people.

Thomas said the first incident occurred Sept. 20 after TNT conducted an undercover operation in the parking lot of a Fayette County business. Read More»

F’ville Police to hold fraud prevention seminar

All kinds of criminal frauds are on the increase, both locally and across America. To help combat the victimization of individuals and businesses, the Fayetteville Police Department will be holding a fraud prevention seminar on Oct. 26.

Detective Mike Whitlow in addressing the upcoming seminar said that representatives from his department, along with representatives from the U.S. Secret Service will be on hand.

Whitlow said the purpose of the seminar is to provide information on current fraud schemes, ways to protect personal information and what to do if you become a victim. Read More»

Burglars hit F’ville storage facility — 19 different units at one time

The police report reads like a blizzard of burglaries — 19 in a row, in fact — but the catch is that they were all committed in one location this past weekend.

Burglars cut through the rear fence at East Fayette Storage in Fayetteville and entered 18 storage units and a trailer.

The storage facility on Robinson Drive off Ga. Highway 54 East is fenced and gated and has computerized gate security and video surveillance.

But that did not stop the facility from being burglarized for the first time in 13 years of doing business at the location, said manager Lance Smith. Read More»
