Judge-public defender affair may win new trial for carjacker

An affair between a now-resigned Fayette County Superior Court judge and a public defense attorney who routinely appeared in his courtroom may help win a new trial for a Riverdale man who was convicted in 2008 for a carjacking incident in Fayetteville.

A public defender attorney for Christopher Deangelo Wakefield has indicated in court papers that she needs to investigate whether one of Superior Court Judge Paschal A. English’s rulings in the case favored a co-defendant to the detriment of Wakefield. Read More»

Fayette Sheriff’s Department nabs $101K in metro Atlanta seized drug money

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department last week received thanks from federal officials and $101,000 as its share of drug money seized after an 18-month-long joint investigation into drug cartels operating in the Atlanta area, according to a news release from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Besides the Fayette S.O., other agencies sharing in $1.6 million in seized drug money were the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department, Ga. Department of Public Safety and the Lawrenceville Police Department. Read More»

8 arrested, 9 indicted for conspiring to distribute meth in D.C.

Nine people have been indicted on federal charges of conspiring to sell large quantities of crystal methamphetamine in the Washington area, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). PTC church burglar linked also to Coweta break-ins

It turns out that the arrest last week of 24 year-old Peachtree City resident Joseph Michael Robinson on charges stemming from the burglary of two churches in Peachtree City solved the cases of additional break-ins, including the burglaries of two churches in Coweta County.

Robinson was charged with the Nov. 22-23 burglaries at Peachtree City Christian Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church, both off Ga. Highway 74 North. Items taken in the burglaries included cash, computers and musical instruments, according to law enforcement sources. Read More»

F’ville Police make arrest in ‘07 Zaxby’s armed robbery

The Fayetteville Police today arrested Erika Tiggs, a former Zaxby’s restaurant employee, for her part in an armed robbery which had occurred at the Fayetteville Zaxby’s.

On August 6, 2007, two suspects entered the Zaxby’s store on GA Hwy 85, forced the employees into a cooler and robbed the store of approximately $2,000 in cash, said department spokesperson Det. Mike Whitlow. Read More»

Attorney says bullies fabricated Whitewater gun threat

Student had no access to gun, officials confirm; Attorney also says Whitewater student was taunted about interracial relationship

An attorney who represents a Whitewater High School student accused of threatening to shoot two fellow students said today that her client never made any such threats.

Moreover, a juvenile court official confirmed today that the student, who is charged with two counts of making a terroristic threat, did not even have access to a gun at home to make good on the alleged threat.

Attorney Delisa Williams said the threat was fabricated after her client threatened to report two other Whitewater students who have been taunting and bullying him for at least several months. Retired teacher busted for 25 lbs. of pot, $30K in cash

A retired school teacher who taught previously in Coweta and Fayette counties was busted Dec. 2 when a Coweta County Sheriff’s deputy conducting a traffic stop found Craig Blount Humphrey in possession of 25 pounds of “high grade” marijuana and $30,000 in cash.

Fifty-six year-old Humphrey, of Sharpsburg, was pulled over Friday night on Freestone Drive off Ga. Highway 154 after a deputy followed him from the area of Ga. highways 34 and 54 in east Coweta after observing his truck weaving in the roadway, according to Maj. James Yarbrough. Read More»
