Mystery rider dies after 2 chases

A mystery rider on a stolen motorcycle twice led Fayette County law officers on chases from north Fayette into Clayton County Feb. 16 before he crashed into a vehicle in Riverdale and died of his injuries.

He remains nameless because he was carrying no identification, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.

Babb said the first time a deputy tried to stop the sport bike motorcycle speeding and without a tag near the intersection of Ga. Highway 279 and Helmer Road. Read More»

Female prowling suspect, 30, hit by vehicle

A 30-year-old Fayetteville resident was struck by a vehicle on Feb. 10 while in the roadway on Banks Road in Fayetteville.

Frances Amber Bounds was struck on Feb. 10 at approximately 6:50 p.m., according to Sheriff Barry Babb. She was transported to Atlanta Medical Center, Babb added.

Sheriff’s traffic investigators went to Banks Road near Ellis Road after a call about a pedestrian struck on Banks Road by a vehicle traveling eastbound, said Babb. Read More»

Coweta man charged with killing father, 58

Thirty-one-year-old Justin Lee Earhart has been charged with the Feb. 13 murder of his 58-year-old father at his east Coweta County residence.

Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager on Friday said the 911 call center received a call after 5:30 a.m. Thursday from an individual asking for help, adding that his son had attacked and stabbed him.

The man was kept on the phone as deputies were routed to the location at 300 Nectarine Drive off Ga. Highway 154 and south of Thomas Crossroads, said Yeager. Read More»

Possible meth-making trash removed from Hip Pocket roadway Sun.

A not-so-simple 2 liter bottle found by a woman on Hip Pocket Road late Sunday morning led to a hazardous material team collecting the bottle and other ingredients found in the street that may have been used to produce methamphetamine drugs, Peachtree City police said.

The woman found the trash on the northern section of the road inside a bag at about 11:20 a.m., police said. After picking it up, she noticed a suspicious substance inside the bottle and called 911, police said. Read More»

Jimenez murder verdict upheld by Ga. Supreme Court

The Georgia Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a Fayette man who stabbed his wife to death in front of the couple’s three young sons Jan. 20, 2012 outside their north Fayette home.

Attorneys for Jesus Ojeda Jimenez filed the appeal, contending that the evidence presented at trial was insufficient to support the jury’s guilty verdict. Jimenez also argued that a judge should have granted his request for a new trial, but the Supreme Court noted in its opinion that a judge reviewed the trial transcript and determined the new trial motion had no merit. F’ville man, 21, charged with rape, sodomy of Riverdale woman, 19

A Fayetteville man has been charged with rape and aggravated sodomy in a Jan. 20 incident involving a 19-year-old Riverdale woman.

Herminio Gutierrez, 21, of Booker Avenue, was charged with rape, aggravated sodomy, making terroristic threats and acts and misdemeanor battery, according to Fayetteville Det. Mike Whitlow.

Whitlow said the incident occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 20 after Gutierrez and the woman returned from a date in Atlanta and went to his residence.

“He became sexually aggressive and she rebuffed him,” Whitlow said. Read More»

ID thieves stole customer info, counterfeited personal checks

A Fairburn woman and a Jonesboro man have been charged on multiple counts of financial identity theft involving Fayette County victims.

Catraya Vogt, 29, of Fairburn, was charged with 15 counts of identity theft. Her accomplice, 28-year-old Douglas Allen, of Jonesboro, was also charged with 15 counts of identity theft, according to Sheriff Barry Babb.

Babb said between November 2012 and January 2014, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office investigated over 30 identity theft transactions with a similar modus operandi. Read More»
