Appeals court overturns Judge Crawford’s dismissal of drug case

The Georgia Court of Appeals has overturned the dismissal of a case in Fayette County Superior Court involving a defendant accused of selling a counterfeit substance.

A panel of jurists determined that Superior Court Judge Robert “Mack” Crawford should not have dismissed the case for lack of prosecution because the district attorney’s office failed to present a witness during a pre-trial motion hearing. Read More»

Fight over jail debt extends inmates’ time behind bars

It was supposed to be just a week left before Newnan resident Laquan Johnson was ending his stay in the Fayette County Jail. But a Feb. 17 fight between Johnson and two other inmates resulted in the three being charged with rioting in a penal institution, a felony which carries a minimum one-year sentence.

Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb said 23-year-old Johnson owed inmates Rodriguez Baltimore, 31, of Riverdale, and Michael Ferguson, 28, of Union City, compensation for items purchased at the jail store. Read More»

2 busted in north Fayette meth sting

Two Atlanta men were arrested Feb. 27 by agents with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) on methamphetamine trafficking charges in a buy-bust operation in north Fayette County. The bust netted 5.6 ounces of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

Charged in the incident were Demario S. Carter, 27, for trafficking in methamphetamine and Ronald E. Alexander, 31, for party to a crime/trafficking in methamphetamine, according to jail records. Read More»

Ex-boyfriend get life for fatal stabbing of F’ville woman, 29

An Oxford man pled guilty Feb. 19 to stabbing his former girlfriend to death at her parents’ Fayetteville home last May.

Terry Bernard Davis, 46, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole as part of a negotiated plea accepted by Fayette County Superior Court Judge Robert “Mack” Crawford.

Davis will have to serve at least 30 years in prison before he can be considered for release, according to Fayette County Assistant District Attorney Warren Sellers. Read More»

Pink shoelace bandit snagged

Fayetteville Police have arrested an East Point man in connection with the robbery of the CVS Pharmacy in Fayetteville on Christmas Eve.

The investigation is ongoing because police think Michael MacConaugha Jr., 20, is not the only one involved, detectives said.

During the incident MacConaugha walked into the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt talking on a cellphone, according to surveillance video. Police said MacConaugha told the clerk he had a gun and demanded money from the cash register, keeping his right hand in his pocket to indicate that he had a weapon. Read More»

Sheriff: Coweta man found with ax, machete after attacking his dad

More details have emerged in the Feb. 13 murder of Coweta County resident Richard L. Earhart at his home near Thomas Crossroads. The man charged with his murder, Earhart’s 31-year-old son, was found with a bloodied machete and double-edged ax in the home.

Justin Lee Earhart was charged with the Feb. 13 murder of his 58-year-old father at his east Coweta County residence.

Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager on Feb. 14 said the 911 call center received a call after 5:30 a.m. from an individual asking for help, adding that his son had attacked and stabbed him. Read More»

F’ville police arrest suspect in CVS robbery, look for others

Fayetteville police said Feb. 20 they have arrested a man suspected of robbing the CVS pharmacy located at 480 N. Glynn St. in December 2013.

Michael MacConaugha Jr., 20, of East Point is charged with robbery and obstruction and is in the Fayette County Jail, said Fayetteville Police Lt. Mike Whitlow.

On Dec. 24, 2013, at approximately 6:45 p.m., MacConaugha walked into the CVS store, told the clerk he had a gun and demanded money from the cash register,” Whitlow said.

Mystery rider dies after 2 chases

A mystery rider on a stolen motorcycle twice led Fayette County law officers on chases from north Fayette into Clayton County Feb. 16 before he crashed into a vehicle in Riverdale and died of his injuries.

He remains nameless because he was carrying no identification, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.

Babb said the first time a deputy tried to stop the sport bike motorcycle speeding and without a tag near the intersection of Ga. Highway 279 and Helmer Road. Read More»
