Commission approves Ruth Drive retail center

A proposed commercial rezoning request was approved last week by the Coweta County Commission. The proposal will create a 12,000 square-foot retail and office center on 2.17 acres on Ruth Drive near Thomas Crossroads.

County Director of Planning Robert Tolleson said applicant Allen & Tyler, LLC is proposing that the O-I (Office Institutional) zoned property be rezoned to C-6 (Commercial Minor Shopping District). Read More»

Large distribution center coming to Fairburn to impact Hwy. 74/I-85

It’s coming and it’s going to be big, both in terms of sheer size and the amount of truck traffic it will generate. Currently under construction near Ga. Highway 74 in Fairburn is what will become a 1.5 million square-foot Clorox Company distribution center that is expected to open in early 2011. Construction beginning on Fischer Crossing theaters

The new 10-screen theater at the Fischer Crossing commercial development is about to come out of the ground. The 40,000 square-foot building on the northeast corner of Fischer Road and Ga. Highway 34 in east Coweta County is expected to open around Thanksgiving.

Fischer Crossing developer Scott Seymour said the footers for the building are being poured now, with the initial block expected to start going up on Monday. The theaters will be situated on the easternmost portion of the development’s large northeast corner. Read More»

Coweta unemployment rate drops again

Coweta County’s unemployment rate continued to decrease in May, dropping to 9.8 percent, according to data provided by the Georgia Dept. of Labor. That figure is down from 10.1 percent in April and represents 5,805 people out of work in a workforce of 59,235.

The May jobless rate was perhaps significant because it marks the first time since well into the recession that the current month’s unemployment numbers were the same or lower than those from one year earlier. Read More»

Tavern on the Square: F'ville to get long-awaited eatery

The Fayetteville Planning & Zoning Commission last week agreed to recommend that revised elevation plans for the Olde Courthouse Tavern at 105 South Glynn Street be approved. The new business on the courthouse square could open in October.

Property owner Larry Graves said Tuesday the 2,000-square-foot Olde Courthouse Tavern will be outfitted like an old English tavern, complete with exposed beams and exposed brick. Wieland settles sex, race discrimination lawsuit

Atlanta homebuilder John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods has agreed to a settle a race and sex discrimination lawsuit filed by federal authorities in June 2009.

Under the settlement, Wieland will pay $378,000 to six claimants and hire at least 10 African-Americans and women into management positions over the next six years, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Read More»
