State tax credit helps blockbuster studio deal

News broke last week that world-famous Pinewood Studios of London is brokering a deal to develop what would become the largest movie studio in Georgia right in the middle of rural Fayette County ... and a short distance from Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Braelinn Kroger gets OK to expand

A plan to expand the Braelinn Kroger grocery store by nearly 43,000 sq. ft. was approved unanimously by the Peachtree City Council Thursday night.

The store will be fully renovated on the inside to make room for a Starbucks bistro, a sushi bar, a salad bar and other expanded services for customers along with wider aisles.

The expansion will bring the Kroger’s size to about 110,000 sq. ft. Packaged with the renovation, the project represents a significant expenditure for the company, city officials said. Read More»

Calpis Inc. to start in April 2014, employ 42 to make animal feed additive

A Japanese company that chose to build its animal feed additive manufacturing plant in Peachtree City selected the area in part because of contacts made through Georgia’s Japanese economic development office.

Calpis Inc. will produce a livestock microbial product that uses a naturally-occurring microorganism to improve digestive health of various farm animals including laying and breeding hens, pigs, horses, dogs and more. The company is also settling its U.S. headquarters here as well. Read More»

Art college may land in middle of Fayette

Savannah College of Art and Design may take Rivers Elementary; deal is tied to nearby massive ‘business project’

The Savannah College of Art and Design is looking into opening a specialized campus in rural Fayette County at the current site of Rivers Elementary School off Sandy Creek Road.

The school building and 30 acres of associated land currently are owned by the Fayette County Board of Education.

While SCAD might seem like an unusual fit for Fayette County, the effort is tied directly to a nearby business venture on the horizon, according to Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown. British film-TV production studios coming to Fayette

UPDATED — Pinewood Studios, responsible for the James Bond films — including the latest blockbuster, “Skyfall” — the Harry Potter series, the Hobbit and the musical “Les Misérables,” is in talks with local and Atlanta investors to locate a major film and television production facility on 288.5 acres in the center of Fayette County, The Citizen has learned.
